Problems loading

I just bought HL2 Episode 1 and I already installed Steam. When I start the game, it only loads if I insert the -autoconfig option, but then when I choose to start a new game I receive an error saying the hl2.exe encountered an error. Does anyone know what I can do?

Try verifying the integrity of the game cache.

1. Load Steam
2. From the My Games tab, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game cache files (GCF's) - this process may take several minutes. Do not verify the cache files for multiple games simultaneously - as some games share cache files with other games, this may cause problems with verification.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

• Do you have your latest graphics card drivers installed?
• Do you have the newest direct x (9c) installed?
• Do any other Source games work? HL2, CS Source?
• Does your computer meet the minimum requirements to play HL2 Episode 1?
