Jeez - I'm kinda hoping that this is a problem with *my* computer.
After I finally finished downloading the entire cache for Opposing Force, I started up a new game, since I haven't played this one in a few years and I no longer have a copy on my hard drive.
The game starts... I'm in the helicopter, my teammates are all talking to each other... and, suddenly, the game freezes. There's this little stutter and the game starts normally again for a few seconds. And then the game starts stuttering again.
At first, I was a little worried, figuring that my computer was on the fritz... but I've been playing Counterstrike all afternoon without any problems. My hypothesis at this point is that Steam is doing something or another to the content of the game as I play it. To test the hypothesis, I pulled the plug on my cable modem as I was playing the game... and the entire game, Steam and all, just crashes. Windows errors galore.
I thought that Steam downloaded a cache of the game onto my hard drive. So why am I only having trouble playing this single-player game, and why does the game crash entirely when I'm not online? Any guesses? My deep, dark suspicion is that I can no longer play streamed single-player games if Steam isn't operating at its best potential, which is pretty lousy for those who are going to play SP Half-Life 2 using Steam.
