I finally got around to putting thief II on my new computer and I ran into a problem. When I run the game, I can get through the intro and then it unexpectedly quits. I think it has something to do with my hardware.

I've got:

two intel xeon processors (2.66 ghz each)
2 gigs of RAM
Geforce 8800 GT video card
Windows XP home edition

I'm new to Windows so I really don't know how to trouble shoot much but if anyone can tell me what a solution might be that would mean the world to me! If you need me to give more system information, I'll find it if you tell me how to find it.:p

FYI: I'm using the version of Thief II that was Windows XP compatible.

FYI : Thief II doesn't work on Windows XP. :)

I have got the same issue when I was trying to install the game on WIndows XP as u mentioned above, btw it's not with the hardware it's with the OS.

What I have done is I have install the game on Windows 2000 and it runs smoothly.

Actually Thief2 will run fine, even on vista (I have it installed on my laptop) but your card, like all 8800's, doesn't support 8-bit textures which are used for the sky. This is what's causing your crash.
Lucky for you there's a patch, made by Timeslip:
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/
If you can't find the link on that page, it's:
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/current/Thief2Fix.exe

There's also problems with multicore processors. Luckily there's also a patch for that here:
http://www16.brinkster.com/salvage/thief/darkengine.htm

You'll still need to run in compatibility mode, but it'll work fine now.
