Hi

Im just starting to get into mapping with hammer. I been picking up tutorials here and there but I got a feeling I am missing big gaps in my learning curve.

At the moment I’m just doing basic stuff like rooms and doors which seems to be going ok. My problem at the moment is when I run a map light seems to leak through the walls, another things that happen is light will show through a closed door as if that door were open. Some models also appear to look a strange colour, headcrabs are silver, and when my maps load no textures appear on the walls until I move.

I don’t think there are any leaks in the rooms I created, I followed the good practice tips suggested in the tutorials I used. I am only using basic lights at the moment, is there more I need to know about them or could it be the compiler? Is there another way to compile maps outside of hammer to get better results?

So it looks like I need a bit of advice or nudge in the right direction, id appreciate any help, I know answering these basic questions must be a pain in the ass for the experts out there

Cheers

To check for leaks click map>check map for problems or alt+p (in hammer with ur map open) this will check the map for any problems. Or u can check ur comlpile log to see if there are any leaks eg. "***Leaked*** 100,34,5678" or it looks somthink like that. If not then make sure ur walls are thick enough and that they seal each room so the light in the other rooms dont spill into the wrong one.

As for the doors im having the same problem and i ned to work it out myself.
For some more tutorials go to www.akilling.org its helped me out alot

Edit: Oh and the props looking a different colour could olso indicate a leak in the level or the props have been placed through a solid

A door is regarded as nothing as far as lighting is concrened. The most simple solution to this problem is simply placing your lights so that they dont shine through doors.

Also you can do some experiemtning with the BLOCKLIGHT material which will block all light but do nothing else. PLacing this in your doorway would give you the opposite effect, light won't shine through when the door is closed but it wont shine when open either.
