OK, I will admit this problem is of my own making, but at the time I did not forsee this situation happening. Back in 2004 I purchased HL2 and started a steam account. After finishing the game, I removed it from my machine never thinking I would need it again. I did not keep the game, the cd key or any of my steam account info.

Now flash forward to present day. I just bought the "Holiday 2006 Collection" at my local Bestbuy thinking I would play HL1 and HL2 again plus experience HL2 episode 1 for the first time. Good stuff! Here is where my problems begin. When I insert the dvd and click "install steam" I get the following:

WINDOWS INSTALLER:
"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use the "ADD/REMOVE" program on Control Panel."

OK, it gets worse. When I go to the "ADD/REMOVE" panel, there is a "Halflife 2" entry and a "Steam" entry left over from my 2004 ownership of the original HL2 game. Whem I click on either of them, I get :

"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-rom or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the HL2 disk and click OK."

I don't have that cd anymore. Yikes!!

When I go to the Steam website to re-install steam, I get the same message as the Windows installer about another version exists---but I can't remove the old version.

Anybody have any ideas as I would love to get my 2006 Holiday Collection installed and play some Episode 1 .

So, cannot uninstall Steam/HL2?

My first thoughts are to reformat the whole PC, which will solve the problem; however, I appreciate that you may not wish to loose everything on your PC.

I think you might need to do some fiddling around in the registry, but i have no experience at that, so you'll have to wait for someone else. :D

Yeah, reformatting would be a last resort. May have to dive into the registry.
