Well, my brother's been having problems recently with his computer that would cause restarts and freezing. So, it finally just stopped working the one day and wouldn't load to Windows. He finally pulled out his hard drive and got all his necessary stuff off using another machine but now he has another problem.

His computer won't load past the BIOS startup and won't even go into Setup. So, I've tried resetting the CMOS using the battery and he tried unhoocking everything and hooking it back up. We also checked the board and there seems to be no physical damage.

Is there anything else we can try so he doesnt have to buy a new board? Hopefully something other than replacing parts on the board.

Oh, and for reference he has an Asus A8N5X which he just put an AMD FX-55 into.

Take out all unneeded equipment and try it from there. Also, take out ALL of the RAM and test each one. RAM going bad can really mess up a system.

Your best bet is to test each piece of hardware on a different device to make sure its all working.

So you haven't actually said if you have tried reformatting and reinstalling windows. You only said you have got what you wanted off the hard drive.

So have you put an OS on there or not?

If you have, or you mean that it won't go into bios setup, then yes, your mobo is probably screwed. Try the Ram too.

Sounds like its fried tbh. That happened to me last year, had to buy a whole new system. Is the mobo fan spinning?

Yeah, sorry, it won;t go into the BIOS setup.

He's trying the RAM now.

If the mobo is completely fried then it shouldn't boot up period... I've got a fried mobo and it doesn't even manage to stay on for more than a second.

Testing each part would be a good idea. When the CPU was put it maybe too much thermal paste was used or the CPU cooler was not making proper contact? I guess double check everything.

Also check the board for bad capacitors (bulging or leaking electrolyte).

Hmm i thought he meant it wouldnt even post. It should beep to indicate what the problem is then, if it has one of those little speakers plugged in.
