Problems with the steam backup file

I just got a new DVD burner, and I am looking to back up my HL2 files. I ran the steam backup utility, and I selected HL2, CS:source and HL2 DM to be included in the backup. Steam then told me that it would be a 4.3gig file. Fine. I clicked start, and walked away. It took about 30 minutes to compress it all, and when I got back it was complete...or was it? The file size is only 2.58 gig; Is this right? Anyway, I thought I would go ahead and burn it to a DVD, but as soon as I try to transfer the file to the DVD folder I get an error: "windows encountered a problem when trying to move this file".

What's going on?

Something probably went wrong with the compression.
Try it again.

You could try a different approach and just copy the big files out of your SteamApps folder like any other file. As far as I know, you can copy them out, burn them and later paste them back into the SteamApps folder to avoid most of the redownloading if you reinstall.
