Processor damaged?

I've got an old Celeron 1,8Ghz which I want to sell, but today while examining it, I noticed that 2 pins (I don't know if this is the right word - I mean the processors "legs") are bent slightly (they are not parallel to the rest). It is possible that they got bent when the processor slipped out of my dad's hands and fell to the ground (from maybe 0,5 meter; not sure whether on a soft carpet or the computer case). So, since they are bent can the processor be damaged or can I bend them back to their normal position?

If you dropped it on carpet, there is a very good chance you fried it. The amount of static electricity needed to fry a CPU is very small (much less than what we can feel).

The bent pins only make the problem that much worse.

If you did sell it, you better test it to make sure it works. However, I'm not a big fan of putting possibly broken hardware into a computer either.

I didn't sell it. It wouldn't be too fair to sell possibly damaged hardware.

i bent my hardrive pins, my dad then lined them up and it worked, most likely yours will work too just test it

Beding the pins back will work but only if you are carefull. I bent 2 pins on a 1900+ a few years ago now. I carefully straightened them using a fine pair of tweezers and the CPU served me good for another 18 months without a problem.

I've seen many bent processor pins, and they were always very easy to straighten. so no fear, it's not so much of a problem.

blahblah don't frighten the guy - falling on a carpet doesn't fry a processor. it happens SOMETIMES, but not every time. I've done crazy things with my processors (486sx, dx, pentium, celeron, pIII, pIV) and nothing happened to them, ever. :p

but the truth is that static electricity can be very dangerous to microchips. even deadly.

remember children, microprocessors are not toys!

I'm just saying if you drop a processor (or do stupid stuff with it), bad stuff can happen (its happened to me ). Granted I can probably throw my Athlon XP 2800+ across my room, pick it up and put it in my computer and it would still probably work fine. I just don't like to take chances. :p

You have kept this processor in an anti-static bag, right?

Anti-static bag? I bought a new processor in the box containing the heatsink and the processor (no special bag). I took out ht old processor and heatsink and put in the new one. Then my dad came in, started looking at the old one and dropped it. Afterwards I just put it in the box from the new processor along with the heatsink.

Well, I can't say I'm frightened (it's not hardware as X800 or any other expensive stuff) but it would be nice to be able to sell it and get the money for some 256MB RAM (I only have 256 right now) :)

I used an old 200mhz cpu as a comb. Then I wanted to use it again, and it still worked.

They sell anti-static platic boxes too (that is what your processor came with), so its fine. Sorry to cause alarm about that.

Oh yeah I don't know what happened to my comb (lost it somewhere). Good idea, maybe I'll use my Pentium 75Mhz instead :]

my old dx2/66 is now a pendant by my keychain. :p

but i'm sure it wouldn't work, cause some of the legs fell of when I drilled a hole in the processor to hang it with the keys...

Hehe, I'd be more worried about the hole than the lack of a few legs :].

BTW:You're the first forum member from Poland I met on these forums OberGeist. Pozdrowienia dla rodaka :D

good to know I'm not the only one here

procek ma sie dobrze tylko szpilki kluja mnie po cohones
ciekawe czy jest nas tu wiecej, rodakow;)...

I bent my pins very often, most of the time it bents when I'm taking out the processor. One time half of the total pins were bent, it took me 5-6h to bent them back again and made it fit in to the mobo.......it works now.
