Proof that graphics is not just about the engine

"Proof that graphics is not just about the engine"

I don't...understand.

Me neither....

The engine is what gives us the graphics (well renders the polys).

Then again, without good textures and highly details models and environments, the graphics would look crap on even the best engine so I suppose your right.

Not sure why you needed the screenshot for tho. I assume thats Bloodlines? Played the demo the other night. Was not impressed.

If you mean that this is an answer to: source sucks because Cs:s gfx suck, you're right, its also about how the map/model devs use the engine.
In Cs:s the maps have been ported, the look the poo because they dont effectively use the engine.

If thats not what you're pointing at... then i've wasted my time typing this

Sigh. The engine just draws the art. Without good art, even the best engine looks ass.

Very true but the engine dose limit how good that art can be. Now some dev are creative and find way to work with the system but there still limited by it in the end.

there is no demo of the game...

No, there is a demo, I'm sure I got it with my PC Gamer UK. He went to a nightclub and spoke to this bird, then this fat guy who sold him weapons, then fought this gargoyle thing. It had bullet time effects. It was a good month ago.

EDIT: When i think about it. It may have been a big video of some guy playing it. It was on a very long time. I will hang my head in shame. Still wasn't impressed.

Oh a video.

hence my edit.

So I forgot it was a video. It was essentially a demo. The whole thing was played from the games perspective, only I wasn't controlling it.

What do you mean by quality? video quality?? If so it was the gameplay I wasn't impressed with. The RPGness of it didn't seem deep enough for me.

Canned responses to dialog, that the guy was passing off as unique.

Sparse environments (the city streets had about 4 people there). Suppose this could be because of early dev footage.

Conveniently placed people you can feed on. Simply standing there waiting to be bitten.

Lacked imagination for me.

EDIT: One thing I will give it, the combat looked fairly tidy. But combat games are 10 a penny. I want something new.

actually, the most recent previews at Gamespot etc have said that you will need to coerce hookers into dark places to suck their nipples, er I mean blood.

I reckon this game will be very entertaining. I really look forward to seeing how other game companies use Source. Looks like this game will at least make good use of the facial/body animation to up the story telling ante..

Why didn't you write that in the first place :) Thanks, I'm seeing it clearer now.

I think it looks good. Sure, a little cartoony and not the upped polycount models like in HL2, but it's still a great looking game. Can't wait =]

Initially I liked the concept of bloodlines, the graphics don't bother me (not a graphics whore at all, more of an AI whore), but I'll reserve judgement till we see the final version. It's gonna definitely be a try before you buy for me.

i think he ment to say souce isnt just about the gaphics? and is sayin that screenshot looks bad

The engine is the good gfx. but if developers dont put work into detail it wont look good, wont use the full power of source.

one thing you are all forgetting is that Bloodlines is a heavaly modified source engine. It has things like SHADER 3 "useless for most" and other such things in it. I really wouldnt compare HALFLIFE2 or CSS with bloddlines as they also have a better lighting engine.

My Theory is that in the contract they signed to get the engine, Valve stated that they could not make the game look better than HL2.

I don't believe that. Bad theory as far as I'm concerned.

*Sparta would like to direct attention towards the SIGGRAPH screenshots

to name a few.

This is more like "Source in Full Effect"
No, that is more like 'Source with loads more time and money spent on the art'

So what's the point of this thread again?
To stop people just attributing HL2's beauty to the engine alone.

My theory is that the budget for HL2 was probably 10x that of Bloodlines

ay caramba, the lady in the screenshot has fooking long fingers...maybe she's a HL zombie, lol
