i have an ati radeon 9600XT
256mb ram
amd athalon 1700+
1.7 ghz

my brother says that getting more ram wouldent make my graphics any smother and the prosessor dose nothing to gameing what do you think?

processor is very important to gaming, the graphics card may do all the graphics processing but the CPU is what feeds it the necessary data. RAM is also very important, the frame rate isn't just dictated by how fast your graphics card is. If your CPU is too slow or you don't have enough RAM then your graphics card will never be able to reach its peak performance.

 Your brother needs to read your avatar, sorry had to post this I had a huge urge.

A good amount of RAM is essential to a quality gaming experience. :D What's your operating system?

FarCry would love to use more than 512MB of memory. You have 256mb so if you played that game then it would load most of it as a swap file on your harddrive. Harddrives are sssslllooowwww compaired to anything else in a PC.

Your CPU is OK. You can make due but the memory would have to be upgraded to at least 512MB. If you have one 256MB stick in there now, I would recommend buying a 512MB stick to make 768MB.

:E Yeah, it is said that Windows XP minimum is to have about 512 of ram.

You would definitely appreciate at least another 256 MB then.

im probly getting a gig of ram for gettign a good report card and a new prosessor for my birthday

your processor isn't at 1.7 ghz unless you overclocked it to 1.7ghz.

and yeah dont listen to your brother

anyone knwo what kinda computer they used to run the hl2 demos

suposeby my brother says all of you dont know what your taking about

Well why not try clocking down your processor or putting in less RAM and letting him know how it goes? :p

I personally would not recommend less than 512 MB of RAM to someone who wants to run XP unless that person was really on a tight budget.

or i coudl take out hid gig of ram and put my 256 in it and see how his all pro nivida g force fx 5600 works

They ran one on an Alienware and another on a Dell. Both I'm guessing were using all the latest hardware, such as the X800 XT.
