According to literature distributed by the group, it makes more sense for "fruit" to be spelled as "froot," "slow" should be "slo," and "heifer" — a word spelled correctly during the first oral round of the bee Thursday by Texas competitor Ramesh Ghanta — should be "hefer."
Really, is this how stupid people are now? They can't even tolerate the current dictionary?

This begs the question: Why does America's leaders of tomorrow have to be well-informed and educated when almost all of it's major industries are outsourced these days?

Unless you plan to work for a major software dev, NASA, or Boeing, there's just no need to look or sound professional anymore ammirite? After all, proper English is not required to work at a burger joint or a hotel. So much for a "service based" economy.

Americans have no one to blame but themselves. Frankly, if it weren't for my family living in the US, I'd have left long ago. Surely there are greener pastures in some other part of the world.

EDIT> Greener pastures with more intelligent people that is.

Well you have to admit... the English language is not the most rock solid thing in the world. In the past couple couple hundred years words have changed and shifted in America on a regular basis. I don't think these people are gonna be very successful though.

ITT: Idiots bash the entire USA with massive over-generalizations because of four stupid people in the country.

This thread could have been fun, but instead you morons ruined it.

And by idiots and morons, I of course mean Dr. Demento.

I think fixing a few words would be progressive as hell. I'm not really opposed to it. For example: all the words I spell wrong.

I think we should teach those brits how to really spell color.

Sticks and stones. Besides, it's not those four people who ruined this country per-se, but rather those who voted for those said four people, as well as many others in Congress. I guess I too am to blame ever since I was first able to vote for being apathetic.

Well we'll just have to switch to Welsh phonics to show them who's boss.

Not to mention that we're a cultural Empire.
perhaps you should to Mexico or Bulgaria:laugh:

Won't matter when we're all under a global governance, anyway.

how the hell is this beginning to transition to politics

What the **** are you talking about? I'm talking about the 4 people who were protesting the spelling bee, who were the ones who sparked your completely inane assumptions and generalizations on the state of education/professionalism/outsourcing in the USA... or whatever the **** your point was.

If you're going to rant on America, at least make a logical argument that can be followed. I doubt anyone has any idea what you're talking about, or how you could have made the connection between these four silly people and your whole rant.

The ghosts of Carnegie, Roosevelt, Dewey and Clemens have assumed mortal form once more and have taken to resuming their campaign from 1906.

Sometimes I wonder how you became the person you are.

This is pretty dumb, but the other person's counter-argument is equally so. "But if we make words easier to spell, there would be no spelling bees!" First of all, way to consider the deeper implications of such a move. Second, isn't that, uhh, exactly why they're protesting it?

KNOWLEDGE PREVAILS!

What are they going to achieve by changing the spelling of words? Phonetics is not an inherent thing, kids are still going to have to learn how to spell the words... Though I guess phonetics is a lot easier than spelling English. I'm not necessarily supporting it, but it wouldn't be a massive tragedy to change them. I've never had trouble spelling but I know a lot of people do, if it makes it easier for them then whatever. And the English language has already changed so much, it's just the another step up the convenience ladder. And this has nothing to do with Americans, why is it relevant what nationality they are?

P.S.
Four peaceful protesters, some dressed in full-length black and yellow bee costumes, represented the American Literacy Council and the London-based Spelling Society

Yeah changing the english language for convenience is dumb what does this even have to do with America. Gosh that's so racist it has about as much to do with skin colour WHOOPS HOW DID THAT U GET THERE LOL

Roberta Mahoney, 81, a former Fairfax County, Va. elementary school principal, said the current language obstructs 40 percent of the population from learning how to read, write and spell.

Oh Jesus Christ. This person doesn't have a clue.

Like Toaster Leigh said, spelling bees are about knowing where words come from and properly understanding the origin of English. If the spellings of words were simplified to phonetics, eventually everybody would forget where they originated. That would be sad. Also, Scrabble would be even less fun.

P.S.

It's retarded, people who have trouble spelling are retarded. I'm not going to support the dismantling of this lovely language for retards.

I'm sure I'll make a mistake in this post, however I'm a strong fan of keeping and maintaining strict rules with regards to the English language. We must keep it pure!

English is easy, some languages put funny symbols above their letters...what kind of sorcery is that? Oh, and what's the deal with the upside down question mark in Spanish?

Upside down punctuation is just one more factor leading to Spanish being the greatest language.
