As the court case over the patented rumble pad feature in PS2 (and Xbox, but Xbox doesn't count because I think Microsoft settled with the patent holder and then bought a lot of the company) that Sony included without bothering to even ask the permission of the original patent holder, Immersion. Sony, like Microsoft, were offered a chance to settle, but they didn't so now it's proceeding to a stage where Sony could have to lose the rumble in their controllers and pay up a huge amount of money, as well as losing all the sales while their products are off the shelves.

Here's the story in English.

it's going to a higher court, i'm not sure I completely understand this case though

lol, I have to hand it to Microsoft. They're a pretty badass company.

Microsoft Guy 1: "So uh, were having a bit of a legal issue with the Xbox. Apparently we copied the rumble pad from another company and they're taking action."

Microsoft Guy 2: "Oh? Well hell, I'm feeling friendly today. Lets buy 'em!"

I'm not in a search half the internet mood to find out what the hell this is about so can someone explain please?

Is it something to do with the rumble pads damaging your hands? Sony copied the design? eh? :P

Another you copied my stuff case? How many are going to come up? to companies even look into who they are coping anymore? Or do they just feel no one would find out?

Basically, the concept of the rumble pad was already patented, but Sony put it in their controller (which is bundled with all new PS2s). Now that company is fighting an extensive legal battle that's costing Sony sales and a lot of money.

At least Nintendo is in the clear :) They have their own design. Batteries IIRC. I wonder why Sony didn't settle. Seems rather stupid. Or they are very convinced that they can come out alright. Bribe the court? :E

Only the N54 rumble used batteries. The Camecube has it built in just like the PS2(exact same spot too :P)

whoh what the **** is a n54 and camecube?
Not all of us can afford nintendo brand systems :(

And I'm lazy, probably more the lazy thing.

Actually, Microsoft probably bought alot of the, because technically Sony would almost be paying Microsoft then.

Word: Sony is ordered to not only stop selling their console and 40 games, but it is also ordered to pay a $90.7 million sum to Immersion Corp.

Ouch!

Well sony should have allready had this under controll, they deserve what they get. As for microsoft, thought they were the smart ones :p

Seriously this shit is ****ed up. If you don't complain for 10 years, what gives you the right to complain now? It's not like they "missed" the entire playstation and Playstation 2 for 10 YEARS!

Actually, it's been going through courts for a long time, Maxi. The battle has been so hard and drawn out that it's only coming to a conclusion now. And Sony are preparing an appeal.

I don't think that Sony believe $90.7 million is that much. A drop in the ocean. Those multinational companies have so serious dough stashed up :) I bet they are more worried about removing the console from the shelves. But the PS3 is coming up real soon anyway so they might not bother that much anyhow :)

Most PS1 sales went through after the PS2 was out, so its not really a great thing to happen to Sony, and that $90mill will hurt anyone. Heh, if Immersion get the money, Microsoft actually win.

How crazy is that?

Yeah sure that's true but I doubt it'll be so that the Sony board crawls up in their corners & cry over it ;)

comment from the article:
Another failing US tech company in Silicon Valley trying to get Japanese money.

most of the attitudes are like that above. while it may possibly be true. sony really should have asked permission for the design first.
