The price is only officially cut for Japan according to this article. I bet the US price change will come as well but you never know.

If this price change comes through to the US (UK?) does it change your stance on it?

At this price I probably won't buy it still until a price drop or two.

EDIT: So it's actually in the thread and not on the link.

$410

Probably won't come to the US, but one can hope!! :E

I still love the system, but not enough to get it until at the earliest Spring '07....

the picture is outdated. its shown with that boomerang controller!!

I'm only interested in a couple of PS3 only games. But a $100 price drop would encourage more people to buy it now rather than wait. But they still have to deal with shortages for awhile. lol

Whoever buys the cheaper PS3 is really just buying crap. No HDMI = no HD support. NO Harddrive, no nothing. Its just a box.

Eh, my friend knows a guy who can pick a couple up for only about $400. And those are premium systems. So, no worries here.

If it's that much cheaper I'm fine without an HD. I don't see myself using it for anything but savegames anyways... (at least until I can mod the PS3  )

I mean $200 just for an HD? I don't think so.

The cheaper PS3 has a 20GB HDD, the more expensive one has a 60GB. That's 20GB of HDD above "no Hard Drive". AND it can be upgraded if the users wants to. And now Kutaragi has confirmed that ALL PS3s will ship with HDMI. The only differences left are WiFi support (20GB still has wired ethernet) and the Memory card reader. Both of which can be added in as accessories

Shame the f***ers are adamant that they won't be dropping the price for the US. They were actually on to the road to redemption. I don't think the quoted European price will stay in place for March mind you, but still. I don't quite get why they're saying that Japan justified the price-cut because they moaned. They're clearly turning a deaf ear to the rest of the world, because I sure as hell noticed that people weren't too happy :P

The same thing should happen I hope. If less people buy the thing the chances of a price drop increase vastly. Atleast now people can be quiet about the Core unit being a waste of money it's upgradeable just like the X360 Core unit.

must be off the back of a truck because that's far below what retailers pay

Now that HDMI has been added the PS3 is officially a $500 console as far as I'm concerned, as that's what I'll be paying for one. Great news, just saved me $100 right there.

Ok, I'm a n00b but whats wrong with TV's that are not HD? eh eh eh?
Still works, right? So whats the big deal?

Erm, the resolution is much much "worse" on normal TVs as opposed to HDTVs. That's all. But don't worry, regular TVs are fine too!

HD discs and Televisions are being pushed through by these consoles with a little too much force. Not a single person I know has an HD television, not a single person I know WANTS an HD television. Now that the HDMI output has been put in all available units, I wonder if the average consumer actually cares?

Wow you can’t please everybody, first there were people complaining that the cheapest version of the console was a rip-off since it didn’t include HDMI, now that SONY is going to put HDMI in both versions of the console, we have people complaining that the average consumer won’t care… People who hates SONY will hate the PS3 no matter what…

HDMI is a big plus for any PS3 model. If it didn't have it then you would be missing out on part of why people want to buy a PS3 in the first place (HDMI to their HDTV). That's why the core model was such a drag without HDMI.

I think in around 5 years HDTV should be standard..unless companies are screwing up.

Are there any details on the internals of this thing yet?

EDIT: PS3 is gonna get its ass kicked by the XBox. Just checked the specs on it.

The Ps3 and Xbox 360 work very differently. You can't just base it on Specs. You have to read the very long articles that go indepth on the patents.

Uh... we talking about the same console here? Technically, the PS3 trumps all 3, no doubt about it. The real question is, how much of that raw power can the developers harness.

The core versiono ffering HDMI supports basically makes the "high end" version completely irrelevant now. Strange move by Sony but hey, it's all in the consumers favor which I definately won't complain about. smwScott's right, the PS3 is basically a $500 console now.

The price is only dropping in Japan. I don't know why this thread deserves two pages worth replies...

If the developers can't harness the power, then the theoretical power advantage is moot. So we really have to wait until release day before comparing the 360 and PS3 in terms of real-world power difference.

And it's still 200$ too expensive. :p

Well yeah their blatant lieing and rootkits piss off some people, yes.

The 360 cost $400, so is that still $100 too expensive? Yes, there is a $300 version, but it is seriously gimped.

$500 is an agressive price for a Blu-Ray player and the most powerful next generation games player. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 360 HD-DVD player cost $170 (which means that if you buy both that and a $400 360, you're paying $70 more and getting a worse console), and still doesn't support HDMI? Not to mention that the 360 is still using DVDs to play games. Also, you don't have to pay a monthly fee to play games online, an enormous plus in my book.

I don't want to come off too one-sided, and the only reason I'm arguing so hard on the subject is because of the irrational bias against anything Sony on this forum, but I personally think it's the best deal.

Of course the two deciding factors that matter more than anything else is which console has the games you prefer and which movie format wins. It's this alone that will decide which console is better, and nothing else.

On another note, does anyone else think it was a bad idea for Sony to cut the price in Japan? If anything that just makes me less likely to buy a PS3 early, thinking they will cut the US price not too long after release. Just doesn't seem very well thought out, and was probably due to pressure from the Wii.

Isn't Sony already losing ~$100-200 per console? You want them to cut another $200... why not take it a step further and hand out PS3's for free?

I'd get one if they'd hand them out for free and also include $250 in the box.

Thought I was gunna buy a ps3 but I think im just gunna go with a wii and leave it at that.

Damn, you all get a pricedrop and in europe it gets delayed, AGAIN

Sony have a done a bad job forcing Blueray into the PS3 just so they can launch the format.

It's delayed the launch until March and I believe it is one reason as to why the price is so fooking high...

If I want blueray, I will buy a blueray player...
