PS3 Eurofags rejoice! Demon's Souls

This is great, will be definitely getting it now.

I am thinking of getting the sweet deluxe edition from the EU now as well. It will mark the first time I have bought 3 copies of the same game and that should tell everyone that this game KICKS-ASS. Most of the time it is your ass, but it will be some of the best beatdowns of your life. The feeling of dread that happens EVERY time a black phantom invades is worth the price of admission alone. It's THE BEST cat-and-mouse game ever created. EVERYONE with a PS3 owes it to themselves to get this.

Not a big deal.

There are plenty of websites that could've got you Demon's Souls, God Of War 3 etc straight after the US releases.

Axelmusic.com was where I bought Demon's Souls from. Imported to Europe then shipped to the UK, no shipping charge. Paid £42 for it, but look how long its taken to get to Europe officially.

Shipping took less than a week from the NY warehouse.

...Havent actually played it yet but that will all change upon my return home in 2 weeks, where I forsee my life being totally consumed by it.

Could be one of the best value-for-money games around in terms of playing time. And I like that.

I have the Chinese version.

I might pick this up, too, though. Mostly for the chance to play with others. Can you actually play coop with a PSN friend or is it totally random who joins your game?

You'd have to arrange a meeting. The blue stone that you leave behind has to be in an obscure place so that other people don't take it and join the game. It's perfectly feasible.

OK I know this game is apparently like AMAZING...

BUT...how hard is it really? I have this terrible feeling that i'm the type of person who would find it too hard and just give up :(

PS. I did that with ninja gaiden and guilty gear (I suck at 2d fighters and so that stopped me from buying blazblue unfortunately :( )

Some people might tell you the game is difficult.

Those people are full of it.

I've got one button for you: circle.

Game's great regardless.

Yes.

Learn the enemies and this game becomes pretty simple.

Circle + direction = roll. Make sure you're not overburdened on equipment so that you've got a fast roll, and you're king of the game. You're king against standard enemies, you're king against bosses, you're king against black phantoms. Unless you are the black phantom, then you're king of making people mad 'cause their backstab didn't do jack.

And Ninja Gaiden 2 is harder than Demon's Souls, for there is no enemy in Demon's Souls that can match the aggravation that was the dogs. The ninja dogs. The ninja dogs with swords in their mouths. The ninja dogs with swords in their mouths with bombs strapped to their legs, so when you fought them they EXPLODED.

Oh ok then. Thanks darkside you've made me feel better, think I'll go pre order now :)

I watched a friend play this, didn't look good at all to me.

What makes it so special, other than "it's hard"?

It's not hard. But it's fun.

You want to know what makes it "special?" Invade someone's game with scraping spear and acid cloud.

It's true, the game isn't really all that hard. However it is the most unique RPG I've played in a long while. It doesn't get much better than this when it comes to jRPGs.

FF13? Lesbian main characters and scantily dressed men?

**** that, you get to be a ****ing demon slaying knight that ****s shit up and fights DRAGONS.

You can fight with DUAL WIELDING SHIELDS if you want.

The story is pretty nonexistent, but hell if it matters in this. There's enough subtlety to keep you going.

When you watch someone play it, all you see is roll and attack. But the actual experience of dying over and over and discovering new places and defeating unbeatable odds is what makes it.

Edit: DARKSIDE **** YOU

I had enough trouble with that black phantom before.. 1-4 I think, who had a scraping spear. And that wasn't even a player. I must've spent 30k souls on repairs.

I was looking if I had any comics saved but the only one is an edit of that vacuum cleaner/mom bends down in front of tv one.

I'm surprised to see Darkside being so generous with his comments in this thread, seeing as how Demon Souls isn't actually a game
because PS3 has no games! :O
It looks pretty good but I'll never get/play it since I don't have a PS3, and thinking about playing it using a console controller hurts my brain.

That first picture Darkside was amazing.

I fought a black phantom player on my first runthrough of the game in 1-4, right on the stairs before the blue dragon, in fact, who used acid cloud. It was the first time I'd encountered it. And once I saw that, it was like a glorious revelation.

It's really the only way to play it. Thinking about playing it with a mouse and keyboard...it'd be a chore for everything except sniping with a bow. See, the hand actions are mapped to the shoulder keys--left shoulder buttons for left-hand actions, right shoulder buttons for right-hand actions. Then you've got the face buttons for things like rolling and using inventory items, and the d-pad to cycle through your L/R weapons, items, and spells...it'd be a keyboard map nightmare.

That's the blue dragon.

The joke is

the only way you can kill the blue dragon is with spells and ranged weapons, and because he's hanging upside down guarding a flight of stairs breathing fire everywhere, there's only two safe spots from him, one of which is underneath him. The safest way to kill him is to get under him and shoot like 200 arrows into him, which is tedious. (Hence the dragon's bored look)

Yup. That may have been me. :E I like to have that spell ready for whenever someone invades. I will just stand right in the open staring at the invader and waiting and when they are in range I cast that and watch them freak out and run away to try to regroup. Then it's fun to pull out a Meat Cleaver or Keel Smasher and wipe them up while they are flustered. Ah, such good times.

The best summary I've come across:

http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/acz2t/let_me_tell_you_about_demons_souls/

"Demon’s Souls is a game that will make you into a man. A scrawny fourteen-year-old, after two hours with this game, will be grooming his muttonchops and ready to ship off on the next boat to fight the Kaiser. If you are already a man, it will make you into some sort of bizarre double-man. What’s that you say? You’re a woman? You don’t want to be a man? Too bad. Too bad. That’s the Demon’s Souls way.

You’ve probably heard that Demon’s Souls is hard. Pshh. Lots of games are hard. Some are even harder than this one. The difficulty is not the point. What sets Demon's Souls apart is the way that it doesn't just kill you, but also stomps on your genitals when you’re down. And it will make you realize that that’s what you needed all along.

It’s a lot like life. Sometimes in life you win, and sometimes the giant armored skeleton stabs your face off because the flying mantis monster you didn’t even see shot you in the back with a spike at just the wrong time. And when that happens in life, do you respawn at the same spot and carry on like nothing happened? NO, asshole. You go back to the beginning of the level, leaving all your hard-earned souls out there on the pavement, and you fight your way back. And you learn a lesson from the whole thing, because you should have been wearing your Thief’s Ring, now shouldn’t you? That’s life.

The trend in hard games these days is to unlock “Easy” mode for you once you’ve died enough times. Do you think Demon’s Souls does that? Do you think Demon’s Souls is so much as aware of the concept of “Easy” mode? NO IT IS NOT. If Demon’s Souls even knew we were talking about “Easy” mode, it would come over here and kick the shit out of all of us. And we would deserve it.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because **** you is why.

Have I told you about the online elements? At any time when you’re in Body form, another player from anywhere else in the world can invade your game and murder you to regain his own body, or just to keep you on your toes. This happens when you’re in the middle of fighting armies of unthinkable monsters that are probably already three-quarters of the way towards killing you. And no, you cannot opt out of this feature! This is what you signed up for when you agreed to be a man.

When this happened to me -- when a guy strolled into my game like it was Taco Bell and exploded my torso, costing me my body and all my progress in the level -- was I mad? No, because I was too busy being in awe at how ****ing hardcore the experience was.

Now, don’t let this dissuade you. Demon’s Souls is a pitiless master, but let it never be said that it is not fair. The game rewards handsomely those who stand up to it, and the greater the challenge, the greater the glory.

What the hell are you waiting for?"

Who's the guy on the left? Just a statue?

Lol @ that description above.

My first invader was in 1-4, my first time through as well. This guy didn't attack straight away, he ran through the level, slaying everything, then ambushed me around the bottom of the steps to the Blue Dragon. He was wearing the full Brushwood set and was using a Tower Shield, can't remember what weapon. He must've had crazy Endurance because he could roll fast without a problem. The guy thought he was invincible, especially when one of his hits totally drained my health and would've killed me if it wasn't for Second Change. Except I play as a Faith-build Tower Knight and I just happened to have the Large Sword of Moonlight, which totally bypasses shields, as my secondary weapon. After his attack he just stood there, shield raised, probably feeling pretty effin' smug. I slashed once, straight through that ridiculous shield of his, nearly depleting his health. He immediately freaked out and fled. Right into the Blue Dragon's fire breath.

After I managed to stop laughing, I Evacuated back to the Nexus and spent all those lovely souls he gave me by clearing the level. My favourite Demon's Souls moment.

I had a moment where I was playing with 2 other blue phantoms and we walked over the edge of the cliff in 4-3. We get the message that a black phantom invaded and we all just kinda waited around on that cliff edge. He comes around the corner from behind us with a meat cleaver and gets a one hit kill on one of my blue phantoms. I run toward him with my spear and roll into him as he misses me with an attack. The roll lands me behind him, giving me a free backstab on him and KICKED HIM OFF THE ****ING CLIFF OHHHH ****KKKK YESSS

Bam and Black, GREAT stories. The good thing is that there are constant opportunities for these moments every time you play!! If I get tired of a particular level, I either invade someone else's or plop down a blue stone and wait to be sucked away to help. I tell you though, the most frightening place to be invaded is 3-1 hands down. Its so creepy to begin with. It's also a great place to invade because of the fear factor. I can only hope the sequel is just as amazing.

Shaker, you NEED to get this game. Even the most inexperienced pussy can be turned into a well-oiled **** machine with a little practice. GO GET IT.

Left / Right mouse buttons.

Then you've got the face buttons for things like rolling and using inventory items,
Q, E, R, G, T, V, C, X, Z, Shift, Caps Lock, Tab, etc...
and the d-pad to cycle through your L/R weapons, items, and spells...it'd be a keyboard map nightmare
Mouse wheel or Number keys 1-9

Also, mouse to move the camera, WASD keys to walk/run.

Left / Right mouse buttons.
Except there are two buttons per hand. I mean, most of us probably have a mouse with 5+ buttons, but it'd still be a damn chore.

Also bro, I know you wanna be PC MASTER RACE up in here, but I'm telling you flat out, this is not the kind of game you want to play without a controller. If you were playing it on PC you'd want to install the sixaxis drivers and just use the controller. Because the way it's set up, there is no way you're going to be in a fight with a black phantom and be like:

WASD moves!
Mouse1 and mouse4 left-hand and mouse2 and mouse5 right-hand!
Space rolls!
Number keys to select inventory!
Shift for items!
F for lock toggle!

I mean, you could...but why would you even want to? Especially numkeys for inv, that'd cut down on fluidity and for something like your grass and spice, that's what you DON'T want. Some games are just meant for a controller. That's not a strike against mouse and keyboard, man. Some games are just BETTER with a controller. Action games have always been the realm of the controller. Don't try to upset the natural order.

I watched a few gameplay videos and whoever was playing made gamepads seem absolutely retarded to play it with. Cannot aim your character in the right direction for shit; missing the intended target 1/3 of the time (and it didn't seem to improve after playing for a long time), and all kinds of things that would never happen to me in a PC game.

Maybe they just sucked. Missing the target 1/3rd of the time is a good indication of that. The only time you'd be missing is if you strike at someone who's rolling or dodging.

Or if you're using keel.

Could be. It was a video made when the game was brand new, I guess.

Got any favorite videos, perhaps demonstrating mad skillz?

Not really. I don't watch other people battle in Demon's Souls. There aren't any real tips or tricks I could pick up from doing so, and the fights aren't so entertaining that I'd want to be watching OTHER people fight.

It's fun when YOU'RE smashing your holy mace into the face of some guy who thought he'd come into your game and wreck your shit, but not too much to watch other people doing it.

Agreed. But I remember one vid that came out after this was released overseas that was a long vid of stalking a guy after invading. It was super-intense and so much fun to watch. Great tactics too. Patience is something I still have to work on. :E
