699$? I expected over 1000$

Hey buddy...you from Canada? So am I. So if it is 699 (american) get ready to dish out $899 here...plus GST and PST (if you live anywhere but alberta)

this is all speculation, i'll wait til Sony says how m,uch it costs... of course, it should be noted that buying a PS3 means you will have a BluRay player, which are going to cost around the same as a PS3 all by themselves

**** i HATE CANADA! lol jk i love it here well time to start slangin crack

eep.

*not paying more than $500 CAD for a console...doesn't want the 360 no matter how cheap it gets*
...
*sticking with PCs*

:D

Agreed, ill stick to my PC........ oh wait, ill be gone in a couple of months so it DOTH not matter.

Generally speaking, in consumer electronics, you take the cost of parts and multiply it by three for the retail price. So, if a standalone Blu-Ray player costs $600 it probably took $200 worth of parts to make it. The rest goes to labor, R&D, covering unsold/stolen units, and profit. In the video game industry it's a different story. Sony and Microsoft sell consoles at a loss to pull people in then try to make up the difference through licensing and software sales (which usually makes them almost break even in the end). Sony would have to be retarded to release the PS3 for $500 or more ($800 is just plain ludicrous)... because, by the time it's out, the Xbox 360 will most likely be getting its first price cut (if you don't count Japan)... probably $50-$100 off. As I've said before, I'd be surprised if they didn't try to make it sell for as close to the 360's price as possible. Expect something in the general vicinity of $400 when it releases later this year.

Nintendo is the only one of the big 3 that actually has healthy profits from gaming software and hardware. Also, the Nintendo Revolution is going to cost less than an Xbox 360 Core System (according to Nintendo)... with the most recent rumours (from plausible sources) suggesting a price point somewhere around the range of $100 to $200... putting it near the price of a DS! Also, the games will be significantly cheaper than the competition. If the price is really that low... I don't know how I could justify not buying one. :p

I think the Blu-Ray is what's dragging up the price.
The Blu-Ray drive that's coming this year has a pricetag of 1000 USD.

"Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has unveiled the first Blu-ray Disc player that will be available in April. The price tag is quite high at $1,000. The BD-P1000 was unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show. The device will play video content from BD discs at 720p or 1080i which the player will output to HDTV using High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). Toshiba also unveiled the first two HD DVD players that will be released in March, for up to half the"

If the price of the Blu-Ray players is any indication, I'm pretty sure we can expect a pricetag of atleast 600 USD.

The target for that Blu-Ray is April, but they're not sure they'll make it.

It's also the first Blu-Ray player in the States, if I were Sony, I'd do the opposite of what MS did, instead of "excluding" a drive format due to it costing too much, I'd wait for it to become a bit cheaper to produce, honestly, I don't see Sony NOT having enough commonsense to realize that people won't pay 600$ for the PS3, atleast if the 360 has gone down in price by then.

Oh well, I don't care about the PS3 price so much, I won't be getting the PS3 until MGS4 releases.

The analyst who said that the PS3 will cost ~$700 needs to look into surgery to extricate his head from his rectum. There is just no way that Sony will be so ridiculously stupid as to charge that much when their system is in direct competition with another system which (for all intents and purposes) costs ~$400. Many many words will be eaten whenever this machine releases.

Except that not many people are really going to care about the BluRay player features in the end I suspect. Even if bluray ends up winning over HD-DVD there aren't going to be many people who will care about it.

As for people thinking Sony would never charge around $700 for the PS3 just remember that we don't know the manufacturing costs, but you can probably safely assume they are far higher than the Xbox 360 manufacturing costs. Then you also have to consider that Sony doesn't have the bottomless pockets that Microsoft has to allow them to just take a huge loss for each console sold. I mean Sony as a whole corporation doesn't actually make all that much more profit than Nintendo which is solely a gaming company.

They can take an initial hit of a billion (or maybe two) as some analysts have estimated would happen if they price the PS3 competitively. As of last year, the total assets of Sony Corp amounted to almost 80 billion dollars. In terms of total assets, they're about 9 or 10 times bigger than Nintendo. Sure, they're not as big as Microsoft, but they can afford the PS3... although, what's the point of making consoles if you don't ever make a profit from them?

Bastards. I think that they should build a completely separate console that plays only MGS4. Maybe it could cost 50 bucks.

Wow, I don't see how this could be true, but I'll admit I have no clue. All I know is that I personally wouldn't spend $50 on a PS3 let alone how ever many hundreds of dollars it will end up being.

Just like there was no way Sony would be ridiculously stupid enough to put a rootkit on their audio CDs :D

I heard rumors of the ps3 having 2 video cards or something one handles 1 half of the screen and another handles the other half//

Myabe that's why.

That makes no sense. Unless you're talking about some dual-screen shite, in which case I have no idea.

All I know is that the PS3 utilizes expensive technology. Surprise, surprise: the console itself will be expensive.

Only 1 video card, Sony has claimed that the system will be able to output to two seperate HDTVs simultaneously. Same idea as what PC gamers do with dual monitors.

However there are a lot of rumors now going around that Sony is having to cut back on a lot of announced features for the PS3 and that support for this will be one of the first things to go. Makes sense really, there is absolutely no point is raising development costs for a feature that maybe only 1 in every 10000 people would use.

The one has nothing to do with the other. They are totally different issues/divisions/etc.

Now if you would have said something about Betamax, then maybe I would have conceded...:)
