Ok so here's the deal. I'm interested in buying a psp, yes i am also after a ps3/360 i can still get them, just a few months later.

I don't know much about the psp, only that you can play games and watch movies.

Why would i be after this before a ps3 you ask? well mainly because it's portable, and cheap.(ish)

So are psp's worth a buy? or are they getting a bit outdated now, I'm hoping some of you will be able to tell me.

Thanks

I'm playing Flow on mine right now. Truly an awesome device if you get into the homebrew scene. Of course most of everyone here will tell you it sucks so don't expect good advice here.

I agree. The PSP is all really great all around device especially when coupled with those custom firmwares. You should pick one up and get Wipeout Pulse, that game is awesome.

Yeah i might grab one, i like the look of crisis core too...plus the ff7 and ff8 ports coming out, unless they're out already.

Yeah it's a great system, especially if you have custom firmware.

Beware of custom firmware cause it for starters voids your warranty, and second it can brick your system (aka, all that money gone and since your warranty is void, you are sol)

Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Then again, I'm not exactly a mobile gamer.

that is unless you get your apps from a trusted website.

Depending on your version you can even get your old PS1 games to work on your PSP. Ive seen FF7 being played on my mates PSP, so its definitely possible.

Overall theyre great bits of kit.

This is out of date and wrong.

Pandora battery solves both problems. Not only will it unbrick your PSP should you somehow fail installing custom firmware (a feat in itself, since it's virtually idiot proof), but also it will install your custom firmware: slim or phat.

It can also revert your PSP back to the original 1.5 firmware which means you can manually update yourself to whatever firmware you bought it at all the while leaving no traces of ever installing custom firmware, hence Sony can void shit.

The custom firmware really makes the system. Being able to enjoy the entire PSP, PS1, few n64 and anything older than SNES catalogue of games is really awesome value.

My current list of games I'm playing right now:

FFT: War of the Lions
FlOw
FF7
Wipeout Pulse
GTA: LCS
Echochrome

... think I left out a few others but I remember there was another thread with a list of recommended PSP games.

Its a great system that is only getting greater. With every firmware update Sony is demonstrating what a big role the PSP plays in their long-term plans. Plus it becomes absolutely essential once you get a PS3 as Remote Play is one of the coolest features of any device I have ever seen by far. Watching movies and playing games from your PS3 on your PSP is just plain awesome. The games are getting better and better and the system features are getting better and better. I don't see why you are waiting!! :E

Well, I've ordered the new slim and lite (black) with free game Untold Legends 2: The Warriors Code (will do until i get crisis core :D)

I don't know a heck of a lot of what you guys are talking about e.g firmware? but it still looks like a good buy.

I bought a used PSP cheap from a friend who got tired of it. I was all excited over it the first few weeks. Got it homebrew flashed, played retro Nintendo rom games on it. Then after some months I barely touched and sold it to another friend.

Hmm, so yeah it's a neat little device I suppose although I would not let it replace my ipod nano neither do I want to watch movies on such a small screen.

Custom firmware allows you to run emulators for a wide variety of systems, including perfect PS1 emulation, iffy N64 emulation, and everything up to and including the SNES. You can also run PSP UMD games right off the memory stick, allowing you to carry more with you and significantly decrease load times. There are also homebrew applications and games released for the system.

The stuff that Iced Eagle said about it bricking your system isn't true anymore. As a matter of fact it can be used to unbrick your system.

The PSP is worth it on its own, but custom firmware adds a ridiculous amount of value to your purchase.

Well, I'm really looking forward to it, thanks very much for the helpful comments :)

just one last thing, so this firmware, does it do anything to the warranty? is it legal?

i say yay
had mine for a few months now and i'm lovin it
even without the custom firmware!

As for the legality, I believe the actual software needed to switch to custom firmware is legal since it contains no Sony code.
