@riomhaire - actually the Americans did use the word Aluminium until 1925 when the American Chemical Society decided to change it to Aluminum instead.

A guy discovered loads of elements. Ended them all in -ium and then named the next one aluminum. he later changed it to alumium for continuity. Europeans accepted the change, Americans didn't.

Aluminium = Alyouminneeum. This makes perfect sense. 'Ium' is pronounced 'ium.'

Aluminium = Aloominum. This does not.
