Hello folks. I don't post much, (but read all the time;)), so I've just got a quick question.

I'm currently re-writing the basis/story for a SP mod, and while browsing through a bookstore today after tafe, i came across a book which is solely about techniques for adding emotion and depth to a game. Now the way I see it, this book would most likely be a good asset because it will undoubtedly shed light on something I've never thought of, but I would like to get peoples opinions anyway. Plus, it doesn't go on sale until next week.

Erm.. It would probably help if you told us the name of this book and some more information, author(s) etc.

umm, bugger, sorry about that.

"Creating Emotion In Games" by David Freeman is the book that I'm looking to purchase. http://www.freemangames.com/idea/ <-- That is his website.

Basically, he has this set of principles which he calls 'Emotioneering', which when used properly, can:

...create, for a player or participant, a breadth and depth of emotions in a game or other interactive experience – or which can immerse a game player or interactive participant in a world or a role.

I think just visiting his site will give the best explaination :) But yeah, I'm really trying to put as much into writing a great story as I can.

PS: I hope that link will cover any other information you're looking for as well.

Ok.. it sounds ok, but I dunno, its probably more use to newbies than others. Course I can suddenly see everyone throwing around the buzz word "Emotioneering" and claiming to know it all a few weeks after its release, so its something to watch out for heh.

I dunno, its upto you, I guess it can't hurt and should have atleast one or two useful nuggets of information in there at the very least. Even though with a bit of searching you would find the same info I imagine across the net.

You can always take it back if its no good can't you? If so then give it a try, might turn out to be really useful

lol, it sounds like you are as big a fan of 'buzz words' as I am, but it was the only way I could succinctly describe the book :) I looked at some reviews on amazon.com, and they were kinda mixed, so I'm gonna research more. I'm normally much better at researching things I'm gonna buy (especially if I'm paying $60 or $70 for them), but I've had a long day and need sleep. I've got a week before I would buy it anyway, so that should give me plenty of time. Thanks again for an alternate perspective :)
