So, a few months back my trusty Creative Zen decided it didn't want to be detected by my computer any more (or vice versa), and i've been needing a new player ever since.

I've mostly been considering iPods, in particular the classic.

However, since they're so unbelievably expensive, i'm wondering whether any of you guys can suggest a good alternative. Looking for something with 30-40GB storage space, and it should be pretty chunky (i.e. no nano lookalikes, can't stand the bloody things, much too small)

Cheers.

My zen vision M did the same thing last week :(

I got a 120gig zune. Entire TV series' on my mp3 player ftw. Though "syncing" is the dumbest thing ever. I miss being able to just drag and drop files just with windows.

Did this post help? Nope. But I made it anyways.

I'm also in the market for a new mp3 player after I recently dropped my stalwart, 4 year old Zen Touch one too many times...

/eyes thread coolly, stroking chin

I'd go with another creative honestly. The Zune is good, but I still like my Vision M better. I wish they still made it :(

So are you going to tell us an amount you want to spend on the thing, or are we going to have to telepathically guess? I mean honestly, 200$ for an 80 GB iPod classic is not a bad deal at all, but I've not a clue how expensive they are over there.

Tell us a price point and whether or not it is a problem to deal with any file types such as Zens, Cowons, etc, or if you don't mind sticking to a few file types for the iPods seeing as how they only support .mp4, .m4v, and .mov video files.

This is obviously if you are going to watch movies on it. Just give us some more ****ing information. There's no reason you post a thread asking for advice when you don't tell us what you use it for and how much you're willing to spend on it. I don't want to waste my time looking around for MP3 players that you're going to turn down because it's 'not right' or it's 'too much.' Damn bloke.

Ive never heard of Cowons before. Are they any good?

On a side note, I just bought a case and an FM tuner for mah zune off Amazon. yay! And the FM tuner is specifically for the zune, so it charges it at the same time! And apparently the reception is pretty good. Horray!

Cowons are really good. They have a few awesome touchscreen ones which aren't as good as an iPod touch, but they can play a multitude of file types so no need for ever converting them. The only thing bad about Cowons is their sound quality is often just good where as a Creative or Apple is easily superior.

Honestly, go look at Cnet and read some of their reviews on MP3 players. I'll stick by Cnet till I die as they've never led me astray in any product review.

Also, I'd suggest staying away from iRivers as they're often glam products and not much for interfaces or features as far as I can recall. I haven't touched one in some time, but the new ones that come out are just borderline pointless. Samsung has also released a myriad of very, very good MP3 players, too. Before when I didn't want an iPod due to price related issues versus feature set, I studied a shit ton on other MP3 players. Then the iPod Touch came out, and I justified that the application store + hacking + basically unlimited functionality with it = superior to anything on the market.

Also, I'm glad you got an awesome charger/tuner. I did a bit of research again before buying mine because I bought 3, 1 for my iPod and 2 others for older Zens, and they all were shit sounding, and the one I purchased broadcasts to 87.9 which is basically a static channel in my area and is apparently illegal to broadcast on so it's always crystal clear as far as radio can be.

I used to have a Belkin Tunecast one that was alright. Probably the best ive used, but I seem to have lost it, plus it ate batteries like a mother****er. I tried two other kinds I got from Walmart (the universal iTrip and different Belkin one), and they sucked, so I went online and found this one.

And I hear ya about cnet.com. I go there all the time, they're fantastic.

In fact, this is the tuner I got: http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-player-...-6519_7-32768399.html?tag=contentMain;compare

Buy another Zen.

How long did you use your old one, by the way?

Nah, databases in the end are far superior to folder organizations. Playlists can't be made in a folder system without having duplicate files if a song occurs in more than one playlist. Searches are a lot slower (and that includes playing songs by artist/album), requiring a search of the entire harddisk instead of a quick lookup in a table.

I agree that separate syncing programs suck, but my music player and syncing program is the same program: foobar2000. If I have a playlist on foobar, I can replicate it to my iPod and if I delete or add to the playlist, I don't have to manually remove or add stuff in the folder on my iPod, it's all done by syncing.

Avoid iRiver like the ****ing plague. Requires seperate software to transfer MP3 files, slow as hell transfering MP3 files, crappy sound quality, cheaply made. Mine just broke a year after I got it so I just threw it out.

What kind of cell phone are you using? Most of them have a music player built in, and will have at least a headphone plug if not Bluetooth support. A few bucks for a large storage card and you're good to go.

Get an iPod? Nope.
Get a Zen?

Maybeh.

I got my zen around 4 years ago second hand, it had already been used for a year, at least something like that.

On the official Apple website the ipod classic 120GB is i think 180 quid. Thing is, i won't have a need for even half of the storage space. Video on mp3 players is kind of a waste of time, i reckon, since 90% of the time i just shove it in my pocket and it stays there.

Currently i'm the proud owner of a Nokia 3310, so it's probably not mp3 compatible. Plus, playing mp3s off phones just seems weird, and i don't really take my phone anywhere anyway.

Something around $200 is good though, but due to the pound being in the shits, most stuff is way more expensive over in the UK in comparison to everywhere else.

Sorry, Lord Shamrock, next time, i'll be more specific.

If 200 is good just get an 80gb ipod. If you're worried about not using up the space then who cares? Do you want to spend 200 on an mp3 player that holds less than that?

I just bought a Sandisk Clip 8GB for €40 (delivery costs included).

God, I love the pound getting buttraped by the euro.
