who's gonna do it? on the FAQ they said that hl2 will be available threw steam to purchase. what do they mean by this, pay as you download? if so who's gonna do that, HL2 must be at least 1 gb large, that'll take about a day on a good DSL line.

It's the same system as it is now. You can already purchase the VALVe premiere pack on Steam, as well as Condition Zero.

Yes, you download large cache files. You're basically paying a one time fee for access to a game until Steam/VALVe die.

The cool things about Steam are that:

1. They can preload the game in advance before it's released, so you can have most if not all of the game downloaded before the game goes live.

2. It's not necessary to have the whole game downloaded before you play. Steam is intelligent, so as long as you have the bare essentials downloaded, the game will start, and it can continue to download content (maps, models etc.) as you go. For example, you don't need the last map when you start the game.

As for payment, you pay once, and it gives you access on your Steam account forever. You can login and download and play HL2 on any computer, although trying to be logged in at two places at once won't work.

it wont take a day to download hl2. took me like 1-2 hrs to download cz w/o the preload and cz is more then 1gb.

depends on your speed, ISP and/or download limit
(400 mb, yes I know that sad for 512/128kbp speed but we dont have to pay for excess downloads. if you didnt guess Im not paying)
