Putting Steam Game content files on mates PC

Hi,

I have bought the bronze version of HalfLife2 and obv downloaded it.

I wanted to test the gameplay on a friends computer, so that he knew it would play ok, before he bought it. So i copied the game content from my PC to his. We installed steam, signed in under my username, and CS: Source was ready to play.

It ran ok, and my friend decided to buy it. So, we created a new steam account, and he bought the bronze pack as well.

Now, have I broken the law by redistributing my Steam cache?? We both have paid for HL2, but only I downloaded it. Should I tell him to get his own copy of the download??

I obv dont want to break the law, as I love CS, and dont want to be banned from playing it.

Thanks

Rich,

Welcome to the forums :)

You certainly haven't broken any laws by doing this. In fact, this is one of the great things about Steam. You can do what you like with the cache files and use your account on any computer you wish without breaking any laws. The reason for this is that technically you're paying for the license of the game and not the actual download.

You haven't broken any laws but it's great that you've at least had a concern about it. A lot of people wouldn't even care.

Enjoy your time here :)

Welcome to the forums my little headcrab. Like Chris_D said: Your legal account is still your legal account, no matter what computer you play it from. Steam is quite unique ;)

cool, glad to hear it.

CS: source is great. Played 1.6 ages ago, but never really got into it.

thanks for the quick reply!! i can sleep easy now!

That's good news - but does that mean that if I've paid for the game once, i can use it on many comps at the same time, with the same account?

I would like to be able to play the game over LAN with my bro - but don't want to pay twice! Is this legal to do?

You can indeed use it on many computers, but not at the same time, cause that would be like letting people legally pirate their game

Oh yeah and welcome richbayliss    :bounce:
