so i finally found someone to buy it and i installed it and tried the game.

the usual console thing comes up, than it goes to a grey screen for a few seconds and than it comes up with a crash dialog, something about quake3.exe

i tried the newest patch [1.32 point release] and same thing.

also, after it's crashed and i'm back to my desktop everything looks like the colours have gone from 32bit to 8bit or something.

specs:
win xp pro /w sp2.
amd xp 3200+
geil 512 mb ddr pc 3200.
gecube ati radeon 9800 xt 128mb.

any ideas ? :(

try running it in windows 98 compatibility mode, might help

note what the error message says and post it, will help find what exactly is causing the problem

Runs perfect on my system.
Do you have the latest ATI drivers?

try deleting the .cfg files and let it generate new ones

the 'basic' information is:

AppName: quake3.exe
AppVer: 0.0.0.0
ModName: quake3.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 00024ebe.

That's rather useless :x

But, the technical information was very long [A whole heap of 'modules,' beginning with quake3.exe than a big list of some .dll's and that some random letters/numbers] - unfortunately you can't copy and paste it all.

is it maybe a foreign language version?
as poseyjmac suggested, delete the .cfg file, i think its q3config.cfg this will let the game generate a new one.
you could also try reinstalling the game to the default directory.
anothe thing to try is assigning more RAM to the game. right click the icon, go to properties. in the target line, add +com_hunkmegs 128 outside the quotes.
something like: "C:\Quake3Arena\quake3.exe" +com_hunkmegs 128
see if any of those work

tried the .cfg and ram thing, neither work :x

i am so unlucky.

it will work, dont give up. the demo works on my dads computer with winxp pro, but havent tried it since sp2. im using win2000 btw.
it is possible that the service pack 2 could be causing it, but you probably wouldnt want to go through the hassle of reverting back / reinstalling your OS just for a game, but welcome to try

oh, are you overclocking by any chance? if you are try without o/cing. also try without running any 'game optimizer' tools or tweakers, i found that the SmartAlec game accelerator caused Call of duty to perform very badly, adn that runs of the Quake engine

I had the same problem that doom crashes... your graphic card drivers cause the problem
my problem was gone after I installed omegadrivers for my graphic card :)
u can find them here

@furiousV nothing is overlocked atm.

@TrippyG i have mixed feelings about the oemga drivers, but i'll give them another try.

just a quick thing before i go to bed for my early morning shift, are your Catalyst drivers acrually properly installed? simple and stupid question, but it is a possibility

yup, i've uninstalled all ati drivers, used driver cleaner to ensure nothing is left over and than installed the newest :s

hows directX?
also check the windows firewall, dont ask me how sorry, but it might be stopping quake3 from even loading up properly

i have directx 9b installed and the windwos firewall is turned off - i have pc-cillin.

i might try downloading and reinstalling directx.

disable any kind of security/anti virus you may have. do your other games work fine?

maybe q3 will work now :s

lol still not sorted out?
uninstall quake 3, remove all traces of it, run a registry cleaner, and reinstall to default directory
