I am going to be putting a new SATA HD, mobo, video card, and CPU in my PC in the next few weeks and I was reading the sticky at the top of this forum for some tips. I have never installed a SATA hard drive and the sticky thread said that I need to put the SATA drivers on a floppy before I install everything. The problem is that I don't have a floppy drive in my PC and I don't want to buy one just for this. I have a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW. Can I put the drivers on a cd and run it off of one of my existing drives?

depends on your mobo really, when sata first came out that was true, but i havent needed a driver for about 1 1/2 years now

also i dont think you can do it through your rom

i never needed a driver for my sata harddrive on my dfi board

Windows XP does not know what SATA is when installing it for the first time. For some reason Windows XP during the install will only look to a floppy disc when you hit 'specify drivers' (F6). I had drivers on a CD from the motherboard disc and it wouldn't take them. I had to dig out my old floppy drive.

I've reinstalled windows and not had to get out that floppy drive again. It knew what SATA was now and found it fine. If you are putting in a secondary drive without windows you wont need to do anything like this.

I never used any kind of floppy (hell, I didn't even have a floppy drive installed) when I first turned on and installed XP on my computer. Even after a format, I still needed nothing.

Do not worry about SATA drivers.

Perhaps the newer XP discs have drivers in them.

Well, my XP disc is rather dated. I'm not sure how old it is, but I'm guessing it was one of the first considering that it doesn't even come with SP1.
