Question about HL2 Box Art (PC-DVD ROM)

Ok... i've been playing these games since the original HL and came across this box art photo which I remember seeing years ago but completely forgot about the photo on the back cover (left of the image, middle picture).

What was that supposed to be from? The Borealis segment that they got rid of?

I also noticed that Alyx's and Eli's clothes are much different and in the final HL2, they are not both together in that 'very different' Kleiner lab.

Oh... and top photo was much different also. Citizen clothing, Civil protection clothing... and the scene in general isn't in the game.


I know they made lots of changes to the second two photos i wrote about... but my main question is about the left center photo since the whole area was removed from the game.

That's the Hydra. It was a tentacle-thing that impaled people (clearly) and lurked in the sewers or some such of City 17. It got cut because it was cool to watch but not much fun to fight.

That isn't the official boxart, it's a boxart made by a fan during pre-release for people who planned to buy the game through Steam.

The Official Vivendi boxart features out of date screenshots too, but not those used on the unofficial boxart above. (Think they were E3 2003 shots including zombies in blue and non-bumpmapped antlions. I don't have my copy to hand).
