Question about the metrocops

Hey everyone, I need your help.

I know I once read that the metrocops (the kind at the beginning of the game that throws the can on the floor and tells you to pick it up) were not combine, but civilians hired by the combine directly from the city and brainwashed or something, but that they weren't actually Combine or genetically modified.

Can someone point me to where I once read this? The help is appreciated.

Thanks!

You read it here, you went back in time. You are a slave.

metrocops are not combine, but civilians hired by the combine directly from the city and brainwashed or something. They aren't actually Combine or genetically modified.

In raising the bar maybe? or someone quoting it from there.

I think it was the Prima strat guide or the actual evidence in game, when you see them lining up to get the equipment on the large hall before you go into the plaza.

I have raising the bar, and it isn't in there.

You had to read about it? It's obvious from the game: when Barney takes off his helmet.

Since the Civil Protection units aren't modified, instead they're just humans working for the Combine, then why would they need helmets with gas masks? To look like Combine Soldiers, or so that other humans don't know who that officer used to be (this wouldn't make a lot of sense though because you still wouldn't need a gasmask).

Why does soldiers wear uniforms? Why does a pilot wears a helmet?

Combine mask is a official part of their metrocop, representing as a combine civil protection. Which is a reason why the overwatchers also wear combine masks (except their mask is different and plus different uniform). Except the elite overwatchers. Their uniform and helmet are totally different.

Rules and regulations of the combine.

Maybe they need gasmasks because they occasionly use gas to pacify populatons, that would make sense, though why didn't they use it when the rebellion started, im sure there are reasonable explinations to that though. Plus they make them look scaryier.

He most probably read it on the Half-life Saga website, though I don't remember the name. A very interesting website with a Half-life timeline and information about very much. After reading you'll get a better picture of the story.

They use gasmasks so that they are impervious to gas attacks, but mainly for the same reason the SAS use them: to look scary and inhuman. Gasmasks intimidate people.

*Lunges forward with crowbar and plunges it into the metrocops face

Hmm... I think the reason they wear a gasmask its bec. they cant breathe human air. :borg:

I think they are humans because a civilian in the food line right after the trainstation, said

I think I will join Civil Protection just for a decent meal
or something like that

I had a female citizen say that to me once, so I ask myself, what happens to the chicks that are willing to join the Combine? I've never seen a female metrocop (you can tell, because of all the radio-communication, they're all guys). I'd think that the women would be turned into Stalkers ( ;( ), since they're physically not as strong as men (therefore not very useful to a Combine army), but there you have it, "I'm willing to join Civil Protection just to get a decent meal." - Female Citizen #48 (or #38, not sure).

Anyway, is this a plot hole by Valve, or are there female combine metrocops/soldiers that we haven't seen during HL2?

ATTENTION: Metrocops wear masks because it is a part of the uniform, for combine to identify them. Otherwise, anyone could get a suit without the mask and pretend to be combine...

I just don't think we say any.

Elite combines dont look like Elite at all. They looke more like scientists to me when i first encoutered them . But nice arts though.

Pity. Wonder what they would look like. :( Female humans willing to join the Combine could've been turned into Combine Assassins, but since Assassins were scrapped from the game, I guess you can't count them as a part of the storyline. Anyway, Female Metrocops would be nice, I don't think we'd see any female soldiers/elites though. That's more of a man thing, just like in today's world we have female police officers but no female soldiers.

or maybe... they dont want to be oppressed anymore. :smoking:

You hear female radio operators, maybe female volunteers get to stay at the bases & coordinate the troops?

Likely. Much like the police today have dispatchers.

what if their gasmasks also have some kind of HUD, giving information on team mates or so, tellin them that a metrocop died somewhere.

btw, the metro cops are most likely humans, considering barney did say something about being behind on his beating quotia (when u first meet him). and when you kill a metro cop, you hear their hearts flatline. again, when at the start you get escorted to the room barney is in, the commander speaks to barney askin if he needs help with this one. speaking in english, which i dont think the combine can do, so they use telepathic abilities to communicate to doctor breen, who then speaks to the rest of the humans for the combine. hope that makes sense

The masks are probably just part of the radio they use to communicate with each other so all Combine must have them.

Do you need a gasmask to make radio communications?

The gasmask can have multiple functions.
Hehe, clever designers the Combine are. Putting a radio in the gasmask. :upstare:

There are probably female troops. You propably can't tell the difference after asimilation.

There might be. None that we have seen, as all the radio-chatter we hear is male.

That womans voice is the same woman who did Mad Max. She's an operator in that movie too. Watch it and you can clearly tell it's the same womans voice. So many of the things she said are almost identical to Mad Max.

Unfortunately, IMDB has something different. :( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1655889/

Gasmasks, filter air, Air Exchange (Is this still part of the plot or was it scrapped entirely? (as in more than just the levels but the whole idea of the Combine terraforming the Earth.).)

Wow thats really cool. Perhaps her part in Mad Max was too small to list. I don't think she's actually shown in the movie.. but you hear the voice constantly in the background on the radio, sounds exactly like the voice you hear in Nova Prospekt... I mean exactly. Anyway perhaps I'm wrong.. but I didn't come up with that on my own.. I read it in another thread.. went back and watched Mad Max and I was amazed - the voice is identical! :rolling:

Oh yeah btw I just checked "Mad Max" on that website and theres no listing for the dispatch voice actress, so maybe it is her.

It could be her indeed. As you say, her part might have been too small to list in the credits.

Mad Max was released in '79.
That'd make her 26 years older, I think her voice might have changed a bit.
She doesn't sound 45+!

I know it's a slightly old thread, but I just have to say that I think the whole idea that metrocops are meant to be just normal people in uniforms is rubbish. One person came up with it, because some citizen mentions "joining", then everyone starts to parrot it.

But actually think about it - if you could just "join" CP and all it would mean was that you got a uniform and decent meals, then there would be NO incentive not to join. Everyone would just be a metrocop, the Combine would be stronger and everyone would live happily ever after. Barney was in disguise - maybe the resistance hacked a metrocops face off...it doesn't mean that the uniforms on everyone else are skin deep.

As for the citizen talking about "joining" - you could take it to mean "volunteering your body to the Combine". And they're right, even though it'd mean having your physical make-up stuffed around, at least you probably wouldn't go hungry.

But the bottom line is, the Combine are efficient - they wouldn't behave so shoddily as just shoving a uniform on whoever stuck up their hand and shouted loudest. They exist to swallow other races. They wouldn't be able to conquer much more than a crappy seaside town if they just "trusted" them.

So, er....rant over, but let's stop treating this whole "CP=guys in uniform" thing as fact, and more like the speculation it really is.
