Hey guys/gals.

I'm wanting to replace four 80mm fans (two sucking air in the front, two blowing air in the back) with two 120mm fans instead.

Wanting to do it from mainly two reason: less noise, and more air flow.

1) My questions: Would that set up be better (two 120mm vs four 80mm)?

2) What would be some 120mm fans which would push enough airflow without being louder than those four 80mm fans?

3) Would a fan controller (say like a vantec nexus) be worth adding?

4) And what's a good place to pick any of this stuff up? I love newegg, but frankly their shipping charges are getting up there for certain things. For instance...2 fans I choose at random came to $15...the shipping for just those was $10...just not worth it.

5) would there be a better way of doing this? Please let me know if something sounds a bit better.

Thanks in advance...

I'm afraid I don't know of any better place than newegg as most places will charge for Fans and accessories.

SVC.com is the only other place I buy cooling parts from. You might get better shipping from them but I'm not sure how their prices for the actual fans compare.

120mm fans will generally give you equal air flow to 2 80mm fans and with a lot less noise. Or if you don't care about noise, they can give better air flow. ;)
For 2 fans I don't think a fan controller would be worth it.

Yeah that's what I was seeing sadly: better shipping for some places but the cost of the fans was high enough to make the low shipping not worth it. I trust newegg better anyway for that so I'll go when them unless something else reliable pops up.

Kinda wanting the quiet side right now so I'll go with the 120mm.

As for the controller...that's what I assumed. About the absolute most I would be hooking up would be the two new 120mm...and I might put back the Tornado on the CPU (damn those are far too loud). But, as is, the fan I am using for the CPU is doing just fine so I won't bother with that.

Thank Asus...I appreciate it.

Newegg's fedex saver shipping only takes me 3 business days. Its awesome.

As for prices, even with shipping it is still cheaper at newegg.com than going to a brick and mortar store.

The only thing that newegg is very competitive on is with cases. They charge way too much with shipping, in my opinion.

Yeah, go with the 120mm fans. They move so much air...well, it's hard to belive.

I have a Papst 120 front-fan in the chassi... It's 12 or 19 dB, I can't remember. Anyway, I can't hear it, only the cool airflow that comes in to meet my CPU and Radeon :) Best fan buy ever.

Edit: Back on topic; If you buy a glider fan, it's gonna hold together shorter but it's more quiet then a bearing based fan you'll have more noice but it'll hold much longer.

When you're buying fans, you should always have 3 things checked (Except price), Air Flow, Noice and Bearing or Glide base.

lol, ive noticed that round cold cathode fans from sunbeamtech tend to work much better than normal fans. weird, slightly more expensive, but very very true. first kind of fan that ive had COLD air come through all the time :E...although they are slightly louder with the high pitched noise.

As long as the noise is comparable to the four 80mm I wouldn't mind....but any louder might be a pain.

Seems to be the popular vote.

Any one have an opinion to this fan?

And please thow out any fans you guys use/like...any thoughts appreciated.

(edit: and thanks for everyone's input thus far)

(edit 2: these are the four 80mm I have..nothing special http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=11-999-001&depa=0 )

Is it possible to mod my Lian-Li PC6 to take 120mm fans instead of 80mm? I'm thinking of dremmel'ing bigger holes and screw-holes at the back and top vents of the case - as i'm getting a watercooling kit (PSU, CPU, VGA) with two 120mm radiators + fans.

I know I could just get a new case with 120mm fans but I like my case and want to keep it forever.

Ah yeah Lian Li's are great. If the case has room for them then go ahead and make some holes.
The biggest issue is if a 120mm fan would even fit inbetween the I/O shield/ports and the side of the case.
