im by no means a good mapper, you cant really call me a mapper at all. I just like to play with hammer and use the cool effects source has. In tutorials I have read "building your 1st room" they tell you to make all the walls the roof and the floor individually. Whats the advantage of this over just creating a box and hollowing it out?

Hollow is not a bad tool but building the walls individually has the advantange of keeping the control. Also, when you build a room, it's better to put the ceiling and the floor at the end of the walls (not intersecting with the walls). This way, when you'll use the texture tool to texture the walls, you can use the fit button and the texture will fit "perfectly". Beware of the carve tool though, it's the devil's tool! No seriously it's a god tool but if you don't use it correctly you'll get bad results. So the rule is to know what you'r doing and keep the control. :)

hollowing is only really useful for creating a basic room, or a skybox if you are lazy.

I find manually placing all the floors to get the layout, then building up the walls, and finally filling in ceilings/sky areas once im happy with the rest of it work best for me.
