Create picture that is 50 x 50 pixels or 19.5 KB .
Go to User CP -> Under Control Panel Click On -> Edit Avatar.
Now you can use a "Pre-defined Standard Avatars" or upload one on the bottom.

Click on the "User CP" button on the tool bar second from the top that has "FAQ" "Members List" and "Log Out" on it.
Once inside the "User Control Panel" (User CP), look at the side bar and find the "Edit Avatar" button, once inside there you can have the option of using one of the pre-made avatars or uploading an image of your own to use as an avatar.
