ive done a search and could find an answer so i thought someone may know.

in doom3 u can use keypads/computers by aiming a pressing use/fire, so u can enter a series of digits or use a menu system on a computer. does/would this be possible in source?

I think it would, unsure, but we know in hl2 you just use the "use" key like normall. Personally I love the way doom 3 has it.

with HL2's VGUI system, it's possible.

All I know is, if HL2 does it half as good as DOOM3 then it'll be really cool. It's awesome how well they integrated that into the gameplay. But HL2'll have crazy features that DOOM3 doesn't have. Bah, I'll stop, this isn't some comparison thread ;).

Like what? Out of curiosity....What features do you think the source engine can offer that doom 3 can't?

well i suspect source will support some sort of lighting, so that the player can see. i tend to find that makes for a more enjoyable experience, otherwise its just blind-mans-smack-the-big-****-off-monster.

Theres this invention called a torch. It comes in really useful in dark places.

and since doom is basically like fumbling thru a maze in the dark its essential

Sorry, must've worded that wrong then. Not game engine features. Gameplay features. I was speaking of the GUI in DOOM3, not graphics or graphical features. Oh well...

doom3 sucks!!! LoLoLOL! l1o 131235

take that magnetic

To be honest, the Doom 3 GUI is amazing. I want to see a Doom 3 style GUI in all games now. Everything else seems so outdated and unintuitive.

Don't fuel this thread into becoming a Doom 3 vs. Half-Life 2 ordeal, you know how those end up.

Gui?

Sorry to sound like a dick licker, but what is GUI?
Game User Interface?

I would like it to be like Deus Ex, where keypad locks were they same as your keyboard's numpad. It was quite realistic and made typing numbers much easier. It wasnt overboard realistic though.

I'm not sure what the V stands for in VGUI though...visual seem a little redundant. Maybe "Valve"?

Having the control panels all readable and interactable without pop-up windows is one of the nicest touches in Doom3. It's one of those 'Ah ha!' moments where you think, this is how it should be done from now on. They should have done similar with the PDA and not have it block your entire screen when you whip it out. Just wish you could do something more interesting with the PDA and control panels then input access codes and 'pushing-this-button-is-the-only-thing-left-for-me-to-do-to-advance-so-I'll-push-it' moments (which Doom3 has about twice as many as it needs; I say, either make puzzles interesting or get rid of them). Now why didn't they take another pass at the PDA interface? Why are the email and voice messages on separate tabs? Why are the video logs on their own special tab?

Oh, and the zooming, though it looked nice, was nearly pointless. It should have zoomed in about 20-30% more.

I havent used the zoom feature yet :p It's all such close quarters it's not really needed. Also, a bit off topic, I think the voice acting in the PDA was amazingly good.

I know I've been raving on about it since the release day, but I have just now decided I hate Doom 3. I just got to the Alpha Labs level 2, heard that lady on the speaker and saw the guts falling and whatnot (if you've seen it you know what I'm on about) and I can't keep playing the game. Too freaky.
