Was Half-Life based on the Quake 1 engine or Quake 2?

Hmmm, I did a quick search in Google and suprisingly it came up a HL2.net thread - it looks like its based on the Quake 1 engine, heres link.

It was a modified quake 1 engine - not quake 2.

now I always thought the Q2 engine was a modified version of the Q1 engine. How wrong am I?
