I'm buying HL2 retail. Does that mean I have to install the game like normal or can I just run it off steam since it's already preloaded?

when you run halflfie 2 for the first time you will have to insert the cd key you get from the retail to play it.

You might need to install it if you want to play it. It sounds logical to me.

I am getting retail as well. Just select "Browse Games" and then click on the "Register a product I already own..." button. Then you just enter your CD key off of the retail box and your pre-load unlocks for you and you are off and running. Simple as that.
