I remember in the good ol days, entering that command in the Half-Life console would supply you with decent, dynamic shadows for characters. In one patch later on the command was removed, and its not in steam either. I heard it was removed due to preformance issues. Anyways, you would figure with the advancement in technology it would be re-implimented. Any idea as to what happened to it? Perhaps someone should e-mail valve about it sometime. I wouldnt mind having shadows in HL again.

Really, last I heard they disabled shadows for both performance reasons and general bugginess.
Namely, shadows in mods, such as CS, would bleed through walls. A prime example would be shadows enabled in cs_assault in CS, they'd jut through the walls of the vent, and terrorists simply didn't have to look inside the vents.

I'm sure they could fix the shadows now, but.. hrm. Yeah, I wish they'd bring them back too.. good thing we have the blob shadows, they're oh-so real

Most of the commands will still work, but r_shadows were hard coded out
