Well i just got it, upgraded from the Radeon 7500.

Its a hudge leap in technology and all i have to say is wtf. To play any of the new game deciently these days that is about the bear minimum. Its kinda stupid, what if people cant afford them? Example is i got Halo demo ran like Shi* on my 7500. Ran perfect with this and on all qualitys on high.
I love it but common, not everyone has a great computer.....and 5min ago i knew what it was like

Comments? /agree? Or is this just unavoidable

You don't need a 9800 pro to play games at full detail. I'd say 9600 pro at the least these days.

Anyhow, I have a Radeon 9700 and everything runs just spiffy. I do agree it's a little ridiculous these days, but, the average PC target audience more than likely has storebought PCs, which means they (generally speaking, not always of course) will have an up-to-date graphics card.

Anyhow, avid PC gamers will have a graphics card that's good enough to run most of these games. My brother has a 1.67GHz XP 2000+ and a GeForce 2 and Halo runs fine at max details on his computer.

My ass it does.

I think they do overcharge, but I can't say for sure. Because I don't know how much it costs to make one. But what I can say is that it will never change.

If they make max profits this way then why would they lower the price any further! Oh wait, I think ATI have lowered their prices further than they normally would. To beat nvidia on price!

Don't expect it to last. If Nvidia get much more unpopular than they are now.. then well, ATI will be top dog and will most likely raise prices in the end....

Also, I think its about time hardware is pushed to its limits once more!
I want to test the new hardware on HL2, DOOM3, FARCRY, s.t.a.l.k.e.r and all the other great games!

And I do feel sorry for those who can't afford all the latest stuff. I never could until recently when I moved house and got a profit on the house. I now have a top rig. Its great, but I allways feel guilty because I have turned into one of those people who are sooo much more lucky than the majority. At least it this aspect.....

you cna play all modern games fine with a gf4, and most with a gf3.

Just watched the d00m 3 trailer, story is exactly likr Hl1 right down to the very tram itself. Yes the tram ride in the begining of the game is there.
Plot is exactly what happend while working with the scientsits and everything went wrong. Complete rip.......ouch How sad is that, only change they made was from the planet earth to mars........ptff

It does.. sure, it looks like crap compared to a DX9 card, but it runs fine at full detail. Sure it has slowdown now and then, but it's fine 80% of the time.

full detail is only as full detail as the card can get.
I had a GF2 and played Battlefield 1942 on the high quality setting in 800x600 with no fps slow down, 1024x768 ran decent with slow down near a lot of players/action.
It ran DX7 of course becaue that was all it supported.
Tis why they can run "full detail".

Well duh :) I actually was going to say that "It's not like a GF2 is getting bogged down by features it doesn't support, IE. pixel shaders," but I decided to leave it out as it should go without saying.

hehe
Well, you should have said it.

I myself upgraded for an AIW 7500. I agree with you totally, I can't fukcing play a game w/o ALL DETAILS MAX, it drives me insane. How can Anyone? I just feel like I'm unable to enjoy a game at it's fullest potential knowing the graphics could be better. Hell, it's life.. congrats on the new video card! :) Lets just hope Doom3 and Stalker play exceptionally well for us with ALL DETAILS MAX. :X

i saw a gf2 in the thread

i have a gf2mx400, this card is really really really crappy

I dunno, about 4 or 5 years ago i dropped 200 bucks on it. It was incredible then, top of the line. And for a 13 year old I have no idea how i got that much money together.

Now I dropped 400 on my 9800 Pro AIW and it's incredible, but in like 5 years we're gonna be like, "oh man, what an awful card that was"

Uhhh... Doom came out YEARS before Half-Life was even concieved. Doom 3 is the same story as Doom. So I guess Half-Life is the ripoff.......ptff.

I believe that Graphics card companies should limit their ranges too 2 models of card. mid-range cards would cost less, meaning you can stay close too good for longer. if you understand

They pretty much do that. Radeons have the 9600 Pro, which you can find online for around 100, and then if you wanna go high end you can still go with the 9800 Pro. Same thing with GForce cards, though i'm not a user so i can't cite specific examples.

And the truth is that you really don't need anything near the top end graphics cards to play current games on your computer. You just get the luxery of anti-alising and more options, things that simply wouldn't even be options on consoles. It's nice to have dynamic shadows and special light effects, and really fine particle effects, but to be honest, while you're in the midst of playing, if it's a good game it won't make a huge difference.

I was playing GTA: VC on my old Gforce 2, 64 MB card without much trouble. Then I got my 9800 pro and the game looks really pretty, and it's nice not to have the slow downs, but my 5 year old card played it just fine, and i still enjoyed the hell out of it.

Ahh Radeon 9800 Pro, how I love thee, if you were a woman I would have raped you... uhhh, yeah.
