I've been reading instructions on how to install the 9800pro and it says that I need to disconnect the current power cable from my harddrive and then plug in the power cable from the card to the harddrive. Can I just plug the power cable straight into the power supply without doing anything to my harddrive or is it a necessary step?

Just unplug the power from the PSU, as opposed to the harddrive. Plug the cable in after that, no reason that should hurt it.

The only reason for connecting it to the HDD is that it leaves the cables from the PSU free for other things.

ok thanks, I was little hesitant about unplugging the power cables from the harddrive anyway

Of course this should all be done while the system is powered off :)

yeah.. or otherwise something could go veeery bad! Trust me, ive seen this shit before :P
