hi all,

I installed Radlinker and was looking at my card's speeds, and the core is at 370 while the memory is 335.50. Is it just me or are those weird numbers?

Also, are there any really decent Source console commands which improve performance? There are so many I hate to go through them all.. at the moment I use r_3dsky (single player so no cheating there), r_fastzreject and don't notice that much of a difference. Having said that, HL2 runs pretty nicely on my machine as it is.

Also, using mat_show_texture_mem_usage (or whatever the command is) I notice that at any one time there's never more than about 20mb of textures on show. Now this may be really stupid, but what are the rest of my card's 108mb of vram doing? I guess loads of textures have to be loaded in which will fill it up - so what's the average texture load when textures are set to medium, for a map in HL2?

I'm just asking all these questions cos I'm interested.

Cheers,
Laurence

i got Redline with my other video card, the 9550 and i cant install it. it asks for a Registration code, which i dont have. nothing on the CD envelope.
a startup command for hl2/css you probably know is the -heapsize command. make it up to half of your RAM in kilobytes
if u got a gig RAM, then use "-heapsize 500000"
about the show mem usage command, it probably shows more memory being used if you use max details and higher resolutions.

and your clock speeds are ok, ATI just round them up to make them look better.

What's redline? RadLinker is free, and comes with the Omega drivers. Yeah I've used the heapsize command and it works a treat - I think that one option would probably sort performance for a lot of people, especially given how cheap RAM is these days and how new PCs, even cheap ones, tend to come with a ton of it. Makes sense to use it.

I have to wonder what the rationale behind making all these settings 'hidden' is.. I realise VALVe want to make the game userfriendly, but some kind of 'Advanced Tips' booklet with info on this kind of thing would have been great for those who don't have the greatest machines and/or confidence with overclocking etc to be able to at least increase performance a bit. Even if it's just a placebo effect. It's not as though these 'tweaks' are tiny anyway; they seem to give significant performance improvements on many machines.

Thanks for your reply..

I agree!
but at least the game has a launch command at all.

Here is my favorite it doubled my framerate!!
However some poeple won't be able to play the game with this one so if it doesnt work just erase it or replace the 0 with a 1
Just copy and paste! Have fun!

cool thanks for this one I'll give it a go. I can't believe there's a command which can potentially increase FPS by 50%. Is there a noticeable image quality loss?

It seems odd that turning off texture caching (which I think this does) would speed things up.. I wonder what the engine does instead.
