I'm running a LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb mother board, AMD64 3000+, and it originally had 512 MB of DDR400 ram. I recently went to add 1GB of DDR400 ram, and it seems that the last stick of RAM gets recognized, but any others get ignored. For example, I installed the 1GB stick in DIMM1, and the 512 in DIMM2. The computer reported I had 512 megs of ram. Upon swapping the sticks, it reported I had 1 GB of ram.

I heard this may be a CPU thing, and that having mixed-capacity ram may not work. My chip is a socket 754, but I can't tell what sort of version my chip is. Apparently chips that have a version of "CG" or later support mixed capacities, but "CF" chips and older cannot. I gathered this information from http://www.dfi.com

my question is: is it possible to have mixed capacity ram on this system, and if so, how can it be done?

I would like to know myself- i am stuck with the lowly 754 and 3 dimm slots, thinking of going to 1.5 but the ram i got now isnt available anymore.
Personally i think the 754 socket was an absolute shaft- 3 dimm slots, and no dual channel? bs.

are all of u saying that u put different speed ram in ur slots and it didnt work or its just u used a different brand and it dosent work

DFI Lanparty UT 250GB, socket 754 RAM issues.

Hi all,

Thanks xLostx, for posting that for me. Now that my Internet's back, I can take it from here!

I placed different sizes of RAM in each DIMM slot. They are from the same manufacturer (AzenRAM, although on the sticks it's marked VData). They are in fact the same type of RAM: DDR400; same speed, etc. The only difference is their size, and the fact that the 512 RAM uses 2.5 volts, and 1 GB RAM uses 3.0 volts. That shouldn't matter, as I can manually adjust the amount of voltage going to the RAM (and I have... no luck).

I checked out DFI's FAQ, and found this:

"What should I watch out if I am going to use DDR memory modules with mixed capacity sizes on K8 CPU based motherboards? 2004/10/21

Answer :

We suggest you always using modules with same capacity size and timing to keep from unexpected instability. If you have to use 3 sticks of memory module with mixed capacity sizes, please be sure to insert the modules with sequential order from highest to lowest capacity sizes into DIMM1 through DIMM3. If you did not follow this rule, there might be unexpected instability. This is not a design bug, but just be the characteristics of CPU. By the way, please use the CPU with version "CG" or later. If you use CPU with version "CF" or earlier, please do not use memory modules with mixed capacity sizes. There certainly will be instability.

If you use only two sticks of memory module with mixed capacity sizes, you can choose any arrangement with no CPU version limitation."

I'm not sure where I can get that CPU information, but I'm looking. My fear is that I will have to buy another gig stick of RAM in order to get over a gig of memory.
