I have an extra 512mb DDR 3200 stick, I have a second comp that could use another 512, but it is using 512mb 2800 DDR
are they compatible together? will it simply underclock the higher ram?

which slot should I put each ram in? or does it matter (aka, the faster ram in slot one, and the other in slot 2)

or is it not even compatible?
thanks in advance guys.

Yes it's compatible, no it won't damage anything. It will just underclock the pc3200 ram to pc2700. I don't know why he said it's not recommended, there won't be any problems.

thanks man, I appreciate it. :)

May I ask how do you check the name of the ram that you're using on the computer?

Go to google and type in CPU-Z. It's a program that tells you all about you cpu, motherboard, and ram, including details about your cpu's cache, if you like that. It tells you what speed your ram is and also who made it. If you have more than one, when you're in the memory section just select between DIMM#1, 2, etc. and it will tell you the info for each separate DIMM you have in there.

Found it. I'm using this RAM:

Samsung DDR-SDRAM PC2700 - 512 MB

I am planning to buy this: Corsair XMS PRO4000 DDR-DIMM 512MB 32Meg x 8, 3-4-4-8, 500MHz, with LED

How will I make the Samsung RAM to work fine with that super fast RAM? What do I need to overclock?

hmm just checked and...

the second comp has an ASUS p4pe MObo, which apparently supports 2100/2700, but not higher.... is the ram still useable on this board (and will it clock it down) or cant I put it in at all?

sorry for the dumb questions, but I dont mess with ram much.

No, the new RAM will simply underclock to the speeds of the slowest stick in your system. As for the guy who said it's "not recommended," I cn't see why not. Works fine for me. :)

Yup it'll just underclock to speeds it can support. I have a stick of pc2100 Samsung and a stick of pc2100 Micron.

About what slot to put the ram in. It really doesn't matter if you've got single channel ram. If your motherboard supports dual channel, you'll want to put an equal amount of ram in each channel.
