Hi my friend bourt a stick of 512ddr pc3200 ram from PCworld
400mhz..and pc world said to him that he has to match the speeds for his current ram before installing it? the memory arnt the same. can he just take out his current ram (256mb) and place in the new ram without any problems? he cant just try it cos if he opens the package he cant get a refund. thanks.

Yes you can take out the old one and just put in the new one.

To my understanding the speeds don't have to match. However, the one running at the higher speed will be forced to run at the speed of the slower RAM.

I am n00b lord

so I don't know but, I bought that same ram, my original ram was 512MB 333MHz and I upgraded to 2 sticks of 400mhz and it works just the same.

tell/ contact computer manufacturer or go to their website and find out the types of ram that it will accept

I just compared the label of my ram, wrote it down and took it to the store...the dude at *store name* said it would work

*Your results may vary

In order to run 3200DDR memory at 400MHz you need two sticks of exactly the same type and size memory, your motherboard also needs to support dual DDR (not the same thing as having 2 sticks of memory btw).
If using one stick or in combination with different memory then it will only run at 200....the guy in the store should have told you this before you paid for "400MHz" memory.
In my experience it's better to research before you buy ESPECIALLY if buying from places like pcworld/currys/tiny/you get the picture, as the staff in these places seem to know next to nothing about what they're selling- or they're just evil biggots bent on getting a larger commission this month. Either way they really are no use whatsoever:)

What happend?

So I actually made my ram slower? Why is it 200? I saw on Radlinker it said my memory was 200 mhz too :|

The original 1 stick of 512MB(its not dual channel)was 333 MHz acording to my Bios.

so when I replaced it with 2 sticks of 512MB 400 Mhz it made my RAM run slower?

I noticed in the BIOS it says (Non SPD), where-as before it said 333 mhz

I asumed that ment "not the right speed" but assumed I was still getting 333 Mhz instead of 400 that the memory would allow.

I also assumed that my mobo doesnt support 400 mhz

I posted on here asking whats going on but Didnt get an answer becuase I was new and probably jumped into someone else's thread.

*confused
so My memory is running at 200 Mhz? :|

So then I will return these 2 400Mhz ram and buy 2 sticks of 333 MHz?
then it will run 333 mhz?

HELP me please

Actual Speed | Rated Speed
100MHz DDR200
133MHz DDR266
166MHz DDR333
200MHz DDR400

If the memory chips don't match in speed then the highest speed stick will run at the slower memory's speed. Such as a DDR400 and DDR333 stick together will both run at DDR333. Two DDR400 sticks will run at DDR400 (200MHz).

oh so I don't have to be worried anymore?

so 2 400 mhz is supposed to run at 200 mhz?

so it can be overclocked if you know what you are doing to up to 400mhz? is this like redline in a car?

THANK YOU ASUS YOU ARE A GOD

seemed faster than my old 333 mhz.. thats why I never really asked, or returned the memory.
