Ram Speeds

When I bough this comp I really didn't know to much about ram(compared to what I know now).
I didn't know of ram speeds like I do now...
Even though I think I already know the answer to the question...

Ok my emachines..as far as I can tell came with a bad motherboard.
My current ram is Pc2100(266mhz) 512 megs of ram.(I placed another one in, though it was faster but if I remember correctly ram must be in sync so the slowest ram slows the faster one down to hits rate). So I guess i have 2 pieces of ram both running at 266mhz. Both 256megs.

Now because it's 266mhz ram does that necessarily make it very slow ram? So would I see any drastic improvments if I scraped this motherboard, got a new one, got a new one that supported better ram(like 400mhz)(same amount).

Im pretty sure it's a big yes...

Yes, faster RAM can make big performance boosts.

ya, youd prolly get a decent boost. But if your mobo only supports PC2100 then your processor is prolly slow too. You might wanna consider saving for a while and buying a new setup (mobo, RAM, CPU, Vid card maybe too) Just something to think about.

hehehe, Ram is kinda tricky. Some people just buy unbranded crappy ram thinking oh ye, who cares its got 512mb nothing else matters. But tbh it does. I actually only have 512 ram my self. Compared to the rest of my machine you would have thought it was a little bellow standard. But you also need to take into acount the performance of my ram. I don't know that much about ram, but I know that you have speed then you have latency. Lateny is a little tricky, but the speed is pritty simple. The faster the better Latency well... I am not the best person to answer this question but I did spend a lot of money on my ram and I managed to get CAS2 2-2-2-5-1 latency speeds for it. If I am correct these are some of the lowest latency speeds around. Now compare this to Unbranned, which is something like CAS0 6-6-7-5-4. This is why i pay £100 for a stick of 512 and not £20

If you've got an eMachine, I would recommend just saving up until you need a new computer and buy a nice one.

Yeah I got an Amd Athlon 2400+(2ghz).
I don't really need a new hard drive.
So Overall, I could just get a new motherboard and a new processor for the motherboard and 1 stick of 512megs of ram to make it easy to upgrade to 1gig(Actually that will depend on how many slots). Cuz I know 2 512's will have more bandwidth.

I'll be getting a job soon so just checkin up on all this.
After years of reesmebling an old HP(I took it apart at least near 200 times if not more.).
So for a nice cheap computer I'm goin to try and build myself possibly.
I don't need more than an 80gig harddrive though harddrives do have speeds to, so I'll have to look into that.

I'll probably wait 2 months, build a nice SLI setup computer(Or a dual core video cards depending on how that all works out.
Motherboard with a supported cpu, 2 pci express x16 slots a case thats big enough for the motherboard and that allows me to edit it easy. Audigy 2 ZS sound card maybe, a nice 5.1 sorround sound speaker system. Internal DVD drive(probably wont burn things), I'll just keep my external one that I got for christmas that was around $200.(which can burn cd's and dvd's).

Most likly a setup similar to that, not sure what gfx card though. I can keep my same monitor. Get a nice 480 watt power supply(or better), make sure its quiet.
That should be a nice setup?

seems good to me, just make sure you ask around on chat rooms and forums before you buy, especially when it comes down to motherboards and ram, because its very easy to buy the wrong ones and end up with crappy performance. Its also kinda the same with CPU's and Graphics Cards, but they are more leveled out and don't change much from brand to brand. Anyway, good luck in working

If you get a good motherboard you dont need that audigy card, the onboard sound is supporting 8.1(on the SLI boards) and has the same quality as an audigy. Only reason you would need to get on is just so you can say I have an audigy.

I have a A7N8X deluxe board and use the onboard sound and its awesome. The software that comes with it has all the cool tweaks a sound card has.
