I think, after extensive testing that I may of sealed the random crashed in the bag, I have certainly found a solution that works for me.
Set you desktop and game to the same resolution.
Note the Refgresh Rate of your monitor at that resolution.ie 100Hz
Right click Steam Icon, PLay Games, Right click Half life 2, go to properties,Click Launch Options
then type (without the "'s) "-refresh 100" replacing 100 with your desktop refresh rate.Click Close, then run the game.
I have been through a good few levels now without a single crash, hope this works for you
