What's this whole thing with autotune lately? Everyone is fascinated by it all of a sudden.

Because it is now cheap and readily available. It used to be that autotune was only available in the form of expensive hardware boxes. Now the software is fast enough and full featured enough that you could get a cheaper software solution like Antares Autotune with about the same results.

Artists used to use autotune only to clean up minor imperfections in tone; but now artists are exploring autotune as an effect that is meant to be noticed. Whether this is good or not is up to speculation, but we are seeing more and more songs that not only use autotune, but showcase it.
