Recently in the HL2 clan server, I was told to change my rate from 7500 to 20000, because low rates 'can be considered cheating'.

I asked what the 'rate' does and while helpful, its difficult to conduct a conversation while playing, so I brought my ignorance to the forums :afro:

So, if someone could tell me what the default rate is in CS:S it would be helpful, because I know i've never changed it. And changing the rate to 20000 made everything a bit laggy. I've been playing with the standard (or what I thought was standard) setting for ages, what is considered an 'acceptable' rate?

I beleive it has something to do with how much information is sent between your computer, the server, and it's clients.

I don't know, but it sounds like those guys are... you know... don't listen to them.

Use your defaults. Open Steam Settings and change your connection speed to the right one.

They give you the option for a reason. Valve wants you to have a smooth game.

Dont worry about it mate. We just get paranoid i think. I wish VALVe would do something about it. I dont really care about the rates too much when playing in pubs but in matches its a different case.

Thanks for the thread DeathIncarnate, *slaps self for not searching*

Not worried immy, but don't want anyone helpful getting killed trying to explain stuff to me while playing! I noticed that when I changed my rates to 20000 steam told me my connection must be >1mbit. lol, I have 300kbit.

I wouldnt think valve would make the default setting in their game cheating :) But it's not like im pwning everyone on the server anyway... So, i'll just leave it where it is.
