Someone please explain to me what rates EXACTLY are/do. I haven't changed them since I have no idea what they do, so they are still on the default values from Valve. And now someone called me ratehacker etc. WTF! I gave him my rates and he called me noob. He said I should change them to total different values. After I changed them, I got a terrible lag. Not FPS, not ping, but like... when you play on a slow server. The game freezes for .1 second and then you get teleported .1 second forward if you know what I mean.

My rates:
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 20 (I'm not sure but when I asked the guy what my old rates were he said 20 so I changed it "back" to 20)
rate 7500

He said I should use
cl_cmdrate 80
cl_updaterate 80
rate 20000


Can anyone tell me why I should change my "cheat" rates (valves defaults) and get lag for nothing?

The rates you had are default rates and are fine for most connections. Tell that guy to shove his paranoid opinions up his own ass.

If they were lower than default then he may have a point.

I use 25000 80 60 because thats what works best for me (default gives me loss and/or choke) and still some guy from P|F told me to change them to 25000 85 85 and accused me of rate hacking.

Ignore them tbh, your rates are fine.

Lol he said I ratehacked after I killed him with my dual elites. 1-0. Then I changed my rates to his suggestions and went to 8-0 and when he jumped down to the water in Aztec I shot him mid air and when he hit the ground he died from the fall. It was so funny :-P

1 gig RAM
Gforce 6800GT
k8neoplatinum mobo or something
4Mbit download and 0.8 Mbit upload ADSL

What rates would work best (or atleast better than the default ones ) for me?




And HOW could rates affect your gameplay... I mean, what do they do :-P

If you click the link I posted and read it through, it will give you all you need to know about rates. Also make sure to click the link there leading to a guide on the net_graph, as you will need to use that to determine whats best for you.

A lot of people in source are always paranoid. I dont blame them tbh, what happens is they see the guy, shoot at their head, and no headshot, shoot repeatedly, then the guy turns around, crouches and shoots at them and they die. Happens to me often, in other times you can be runing forward and your first shot gets a hs. Its this inconsistancy in CSS that makes people think everyone is hacking/rating/cheating etc.

Valve should set rates according to your connection automatically and not allow them to be changed. I dont remember anyone saying anything about rates in quake3, it was all about ping in those days.

Everybody has that avatar lol. Allright, thanks for the help. I did click the link but it was all pretty complicated :-P
And I saw nothing about recoil so the guy flaming me didnt even know what he was talking about.


So how can you ratehack. I mean, you're telling me to optimize my rates but if I optimize them TO much it's hacking? wtf :-P

your rates are how fast you send and request information to and from the server

the more often the more often you send the more accurately you will be displayed to others, also your bullets will be tracked more accurately

the more often you recieve the more accurately everythign else will be dislayed to you


you dont want your updaterate higher than ur average fps as a general rule.

if your rates are too low everything will be crappy and laggy, if your rates are too high for ur comp / connection then ull get choke and shit

So why do people call other people ratehackers if you optimize them? I don't see how you gain an unfair advantage by changing them.

as stated before, people are just paranoid. It's very easy to tell if someone is ratehacking cause you can actually see it. For example: thier ping will be 30-50 and they will warp around as if they had a ping of 200. You should never change your rates unless you have a slow connection like 56k or a really fast connection like T3. Never change your rates because an admin/loser tells you to. Always leave your rates at default because more often then not changing the values will have adverse effects.

Do what I do when I get accused of cheating say: " I don't cheat, but thank you for assuming I do" if you get banned then be grateful, that is a server you do not want to play on. If they say "OMFG I shot you 5 times and didn't hit u" just tell them the truth "thats all you" cuz it has nothing to do with hacking or whatever, they missed and thats that.

"Ratehacker" is one of the lamest, dumbest, most poor-sport, pathetic, pitiful, idiotic accusations I have ever heard.

Someone who gets killed and then calls someone a "ratehacker" should be banned from the Steam network.
