I heartily disagree! Why does this remind me of when Josef Stalin took over russia?

Because you've got no grasp of history.

Probably because you are another one of those people who believes free speech applies to everything, even privately owned discussion forums...they can do whatever they want with the forum and you will abide by the rules or get out :borg:

Who knows? You know!

A more serious aproach, if someone can get all the "banned" stuff elsewhere, why not talk about it here? This is a HL community....so why not talk about HL2?

Why not have a seperate room to at least discuss the beta? No, this has nothing to do with free speech, it's just silly to ban people for posting screenshots or other info.

The banning is because it was getting out of controle..and most of us dont want to see any of that stuff.

And having the Beta is ILLEGAL

Ouch.

Not this again... Me and a couple of other forum members were in a large argument about "free speech" on these boards. Only it was over people being ass-holes... Main point is the MODs said no Beta talk, and I think that means no Beta talk.

Ok maybe I should assume the best- maybe they are only trying to keep on good terms with Valve...

Last time I checked, these forums don't practice free speech. They are owned and operated by the mods, and they can do as they please.

You can, of course, discuss the implications of the leak for the game, and so forth. No one is being asked to not speak their mind about issues of concern to the community. But to discuss these issues, it is not in the least necessary to trade in specific leaked information. Yes, there was a leak, and yes, there is a compiled version of the source with some content being circulated (to call it a "beta" is pretty darn silly). That much is fine, and everybody knows it, and it is more than enough to discuss the larger issues of how this will affect Valve and the community.

What is being very clealy asked is that people not participate in spreading the beta, spoilers from the beta, and other content related to it. All of it is flatly illegal material, not to mention having the potential to ruin suprises for people who want to experience the REAL game, and not what some hacker cobbled together out of what he snatched.

I don't think that policy is in any way unreasonable, and I'm about as strong an advocate as free speech as you can find (a dues paying member of the ACLU, for one thing).

yep i agree apos.

as long as we can discuss what inplications all this has.

after all its a discussion forum

but to provide links is not in any way a good thing for here

Luckily the beta has no real spoilers, and even the weapons are known, pre-existing ones. There are only two small spoilers I've spotted from scanning the maps, no big storyline stuff... I think people really SHOULD discuss the implications and things like features, for instance the weird OGL support thing, or backwards compat w/HL1... As far as spamming screenies of maps I'd lay off of that as it might spoil things for some people, but still, I think screenies of known areas are ok, right?

And hey, DefaultUserName, he does have a great grasp of history, I should know, he's my brother ; ) We're both educated chaps. And he is right in saying...

No. Read the official statement.

People can discuss the content and technical capability of official releases all they want. Getting illegal content working, or delving into what it contains is not going to be tolerated.
