Reality TV has hit a new low

I don't even get why there is a donor problem. Just make everyone a donor by default unless they specifically state otherwise.

And the show sounds bad, and the fact that viewers can text to vote does make it bad (probably wouldn't have an objection if that weren't the case, this is a political statement, not something you should profit on) but unlike any other reality shows it really does show the reality. Sure, two out of those three are fucked, but there's a large chance (much larger than 67%) they were gonna be fucked anyway. Thirty-three beats the hell out of whatever percentage they had. But I get the ethical thing to do here is to even deny them that 33%?

Besides, there's a chance this is just a cry for publicity and to get the discussion on donors going, which they have already achieved, and they use actors for this.

Trust it to be made by the Same guys who Made Big Brother but this might make more people donors by showing them how desperate people are.

How does the producer who pitched this show in the first place sleep at night?

Another reason to support censorship.

no it's no reason to support censorship ..in a truely free society it is society itself that determines whether it succeeds or not, not the government

the show is in bad taste and makes a mockery of people suffering from life threatening illness ..however it doesnt mean it should be yanked from the air, unless it can be clearly shown that the show is detrimental to the patient's health (I dont see how it wouldnt, if you're one of the losers) or if it has negative impact on the donor program (I dont see how) ..still, I dont think the public or even the patient should decide who gets what ..that determination should come solely from the doctors involved ..whomever is most deserving/in danger/best match should get the kidney in question

or whoever can juggle the best, as it looks like thats where this show is heading

In most deaths you can't retrieve the organs intact.

Really? Are you sure? I'm sure with most deaths you can retrieve a few organs no problem.

Anyway, i agree with Ryan either way.

Something you people should remember, the Dutch have a lot of controversial ideas. This isn't the first time they've done something similarly "shocking". And I'm not talking about weed either. I can't recall exactly, but wasn't there a live sex on tv program that was also scrapped or something? that's just one example.

You can't say there is a split 1/3 chance of each contestant winning; it's a contest based on the judgement of individual lifestyles by other individuals - by the description on the article, it is a contest based on rules set by the TV producers. And by these rules, the producers have effectively denied a large proportion of ductch patients any chance whatsoever of acquiring the kidney. And I think it might be right for awareness to be raised about the issue but it would have been infinitely wiser to make the show hypothetical and fictional rather than real - whoever suggested using actors insted was correct imho.

meh in the future the gladiators will come back,I bet ya

You know, as bad as the all the people involved in making the show are, the people who are just as bad are the people actually STUPID enough to lap this crap up.

Ignore it, and it'll go away.

Bah humbug. Away with you, demon of noncomformity! Dissenter be damned!

Seriously, I think you're right on this one. Still, shows that are in bad taste shouldn't exist.

It was a hoax by the way, the show aired tonight. I hadn't seen it, but from what I've heard it wasn't revealed to be a hoax until the very end. The only hoax was the part of the contestants getting a kidney, there was no kidney. The contestants were not actors though, but genuine kidney patients. It was a publicity stunt and a fucking effective one too. They got everyone talking (and not just here, it was worldwide news) about organ donation and pushed the issue into the spotlight. Great respect for BNN :)

The solution is still simple though, everyone should simply be a donor by default. The only way to avoid it should be a long and painful bureaucratic process of many months.

In most deaths you can't retrieve the organs intact.

Well if there's still a donor shortage after my solution, there's nothing else you can do. Besides xenotransplantation, which isn't viable yet.

only numbers could make me want to watch a show where we vote on who receives a kidney they need to survive. well done.

Oh yeah. :D Advertisers should hire me to bash their product.

That is really awesome.

I agree 100%. You're not using your organs when you die, why not give it to someone else?

OoooOh! That's a relief!

PvtRyan's avatar symbolizes my feelings towards this nicely. Don't know about the christmas hat, though... :p

All the more reason to support Pvt. Ryan's point.

Also, the show is controversial, but they defend themselves by saying they are highlighting an important fact.

And the Dutch have a crazy sense of humour.

Repeating myself, and I don't care. DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ATTENTION.

I HATE reality TV. HATE it.

/rant.

whoever suggested using actors insted was correct imho.

That means people will "Meh" it and not care.
This is a Reality TV Show, and it shows Reality.
Everyday we judge people, and there a lot of people who need donors for kidneys out there, this just brings the 2 together
This should bring publicity to donors though which is good

i cant understand why i should care..its a dutch television programme whi cares...its a dutch issue...channel 4 in the uk does much more offensive and distgusting programmes
