I've had this monitor for about 2 years now, and ever since I got it, it seems the contrast is too low. For instance, when I look at screenshots of HL2, the darker areas (specifically Ravenholme kind of darkness) it's completely and utterly black. I have to select the image to get that gray/white brightness up.

Is there any way I can + the contrast? I've fiddled with my monitor options, brightness and contrast are at 100%, I've gone into my video card options and there's no fields to adjust it. Any help would be great.

Powerstrip is your friend

I had the same problem as you with one of my old moniters. I set all gamma and brightness to high and it still didnt help. Powerstrip can let you adjust the brightness while in game, among many other things.

What kind of monitor is it? If it's an aperture grille monitor then it's probably because those are very saturated with color.

Powerstrip is awesome.

Could also try setting the gamma, contrast and brightness settings on the control panel for your graphics card. I know that Ati allows you to set different setting for desktop and 3d full screen apps. Not too sure about nVidia, although I'm sure they offer a similar feature.
