what kind of graphics card is it? do you have the latest driver for the graphics card?

There are massive threads about this elsewhere...but I cleared the problem when I upgraded my graphics card (from a 64mb intel/intergrated card to 256mb GeForce FX something or other).

I GOT INTEL INTERGRATED EXTREME GRAPHICS 64mb
IF this is the same as yours please tell me the new type u got
Also please say how much it cost in aussie dollars thx

no offence but you wouldn't expect an intel intergrated graphics card to run doom, nevermind hl2.

Doom... 1? lol

Doom 3 is actually a lot harder on the graphics card than HL2. Source just seems to be more efficient. Either that, or those pesky dynamic shadows really slow things down.

But yeah. A 64 MB graphics card is NOT enough to play HL2. Or any other reasonably new game, either. An upgrade is more than worth it.

Heh, I'm playing HL2 on my laptop with a 64 MB FX5700 with everything at least medium quality. It's not the memory that counts, it's the chipset. And I doubt these memory errors are videocard related/the result of his bad videocard. I'm getting those errors sometimes too, mostly when switching between Hammer and CSS/HL2.

I didn't think that the problem would be related to my video card...but it went away as soon as I upgraded. Simple as that. I know that it doesn't work for everyone, but it worked for me.

Wolvesrdogs, there's nothing to tell...just upgrade to anything other than the intergrated video card (which is useless for any new 3d game). My Geforce is bottom range, but I picked up cheap (£70 - which, I think is about $90). HL2 and Doom 3 look great on it, and the memory error as pissed off.

Blerp blurp.

Additionally have you tried running a memory test?

Microsoft have a free one that can be downloaded from: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Just because most other apps run fine, doesn't mean that your memory isn't faulty. Coincidentally I've never had any kind of problem like that, yet when I ran the memory test it found errors and looks as though if I start getting major problems it's because one of my memory chips is faulty.

Do a memory test and see if it reports any errors.

In addition to my upgrade, I did basic stuff like defrag my hard drive, run tests, made sure that all anti-virus software was not running in the background.

The Steam forums have some long and helpful threads about this, I suggest you check them out.

My specs:

Windows XP (Service pack 2)
2.92ghz P4 intel something or other
512mb DDR-RAM
256mb Geforce FX 5200

All HL2 updates are fully installed.

I all I did was follow some basic guides that were suggested by Valve on the steam website and forums. This included defrags and turning off background applications etc.

None of these things helped the problem. I was getting a better graphics card anyway (becasue the intergrated one IS rubbish). I didn't expect it to sort it out because people with much better specs than me were getting the same problem. However, once the card was in the problem went away.

It has happended once since in deathmatch, but only once (and I play it everyday).

I suggest you you check for errors, run defrag, quit all other applications whilst you play (like AVG or whatever you have on), make sure HL2 is totally up-to-date and get a better graphics card (you'll want one anyway!)

Love your mother and respect the law.

You always, ALWAYS need to run hardware tests if you run into problems like these. I highly recommend memtest: http://www.memtest86.com
and prime95 http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm. Run both programs for at least 12 hours (overnight and of course not at the same time), start with memtest, than prime95. Do stresstest No. 2 in prime95. If that comes out fine, you can be 99% sure that your hardware is ok.
