How about this then: Tim, who wrote the article, sits beside me in the office. I just asked him and his words were: "You play as Gordon". He asked Valve when he was there.

The eurogamer article just said you'll probably play as someone who isn't Gordon...-_-. I've got to keep up on new info. Urgh, yeah just close this.

Indications seem to be that you will play as Gordon.. but I'd rather play as someone else.

i don't want to play as Gordon in expansions.
part of why is simply because Gordon should be just left to the main HL games.. its what makes the HL series special IMHO.

besides, Valve have a very good way of building characters and telling the story and i think they should show that off by introducing a new character or bringing back Adrian Shepherd.. or Barney.. but yeah.. staying away from Gordon in expansions is a good thing IMHO.

Shepard is owned by Gearbox, right?

So that rules him out. But yeah, you play as Gordon.

i emailed Marc Laidlaw about Adrian Shepherd and its un-clear on who "owns" that IP.
simple thinking says "Gearbox owns the character" while deep thinking says "Valve are smart people and Gearbox would need Valve approval for anything, expansion or otherwise for HL related materials"

theres a few Shepherd haters around here, so i'll leave it at that :p

What? Shepard haters? Here?

It not likely that it will be adrian shepard. It more likely to be Gordon but I hope it will be Barney.
Whoever it is I'll still be happy.

We will see. But I hope it will be Shepard. It would be good to bring him back now.

It won't be barney. Think about it. You'd just end up replaying sections.

Corporal Adrian Shepard. United States Marines Corps Special Forces. Hazordus Envioroments Unit. Age (as of half-life opposing force): 23.
Adrian Shepard was the character played in op4. he came in about halfway through operations in Black Mesa and was left behind, along with some other marines, after they pulled them out and sent in the black ops. he subsiquently stopped a 'Gen Worm' from being teleported from xen. this means he (superficcaly at least) saved the world from the aliens. after the final battle he found himself in an osprey with the G-man as Black Mesa was destoryed by at least one atomic bomb. then the osprey teleported into deep space, a prison for him until it could be decided what to do with him, the G-man left and what happened next we just don't know.
I think it would be cool to see him return, but in all probubility we will never see him again. the charicter for the expansion will probubly be freeman, or an as yet unknown charicter. i still hold out slim hopes that it will be Otis, the incompitent, but well armed, security guard from Black Mesa.

appologies for bad spelling

I curse ye all, because for my money it shall noteth be Free. I refuse to believe that Valve would pwn itself so easily, especially with the mysterious G-man's speech and everything.

I mean, who would you trust, the Gman or Valve?

How many times do I hafta tell you guys YOU ARE GONNA BE FREEMAN. jesus

In response to all the speculation about G-Man's origin and motivation, and so forth, we've decided to give the player an opportunity to play on the "dark side of the force" as it were. In Aftermath, you'll be G-Man himself, the man behind the briefcase.

We figured it would be great to give people a fresh perspective as a kind of puppetmaster figure, as opposed to any other character where events are always dictated to you. Look forward to lots of flexibility and non-linearity.

Thanks for your interest

There you have it folks, straight from the horse's mouth. Laidlaw told me that when I woke up to find him in bed beside me this morning.

How many times do i hafta tell you guys VALVE WON'T PWN THEMSELVES. Jeebus. ;)

Haha, playing as the puppetmaster would be fun :D

WEll I can't see them doing any expansions as another player during the hl2 game.. i mean... you cant be like alyx who has plenty of lines to say and actions she does. Any way but since its AFTERMATH I think it could be anyone...

What does that mean?

Gman's closing speech is teh supense. It wouldn't make sense to bring him out 5 seconds after taking him out just to escape one tinesy little explosion.

/me mutters about... well, I'm not at liberty to say...

Valve will not Pwn themselves - Gordon will not be Aftermath's Hero.

Well, I sympathise with your sig, Jintor, but I wish I had that much faith....

If you play as Shepard, that will be one bad game, but since you aren't, yay Freeman!

wel since its been confirmed that you are freeman Valve has probably found some way of doing it without "pwning themselves"

you all know gordon is still alive because he FLED from shepard's wrath in the teleporting chamber at the end of lambda complex. he just knew he was no match at the time.

I gotta say that IMO, both Freeman and Shepard were pretty badass..BUT! If I had to choose...well,I'd have to go with Freeman.

simply for the fact that with no real weapons/combat training(hazard course bedamned!) and one hell of alot more to deal with,Gordon Freeman accomplished much more than Adrian Shepard..

although for the sake of continuing the "tradition" of HL expansion packs Barney or Adrian should somehow have been worked into Aftermath..

forgive my rambling..I'm medicated.. heh heh :smoking:  damn my lower back!

Yeah, but if Gordon hadn't been what he was and done the things in Black Mesa, there would be no Half Life, there would be no expansion pack, so no Adrian Shepherd! Talk about time paradoxes. :)
