The recoil on the Thompson and MP40 is a bit much, no?

A few times i've been crouching and aiming at someone 10-20 feet away. They weren't moving and I was firing short bursts. Initially I was wondering why they weren't dying, or even noticing that I was shooting at them. Then it twigged, the bullets weren't going anywhere near them :/ (even when compensating for the recoil or firing single shot bursts)

Are these guns just awful at anything other than short range? (which seems involve a great deal of luck)

I'm enjoying the teamplay side to DoD:S (even the camping and laming doesn't seem out of place here) but the shooting is very 'spammy'.

yes the thompson and mp40 suck at anything but short range ...and eventhen you have to hit them a few times before they go down ..same as it was in DoD

Ah, fair enough then.

A little less reoil wouldn't hurt though. It's annnoying being able to see bad guys that aren't that far away and being unable to shoot them

heh, ya you just got to get used to it ..there's far more recoil than any other compareable game ...just aim a little lower and let the recoil work for you

I'm with you on this one, Warbie. The recoil is INSANE. :\

Makes it nearly impossible to kill someone no matter where they may be, the BAR especially. Oh, and that one gun that's fockin huge and powerful, it IS impossible to kill someone with that. One burst and you're looking straight up at the sky above. Ah!

And if one says it's made for the realism, well, realism sucks and is NOT fun. Some say it takes some getting used to, I can understand that, but this is just too difficult to get used to. Hmph, guess I'm the one not used to such a recoil. I think Valve should should put some real thought into toning down the recoil of the weaponry to make a much more enjoyable experience.

Tis all. My only real complaint with the game. Other than that... *alt+tabs back to DoD:S*

That big gun your meant to mount on something ;)

I've just come back from another couple of hours on DoD:S - and the smgs still suck. It's 'free', so I can't moan, but I can't get into something that is so 'spammy'. I'm not a fan of camping either, but realise it's as much a part of DoD as strafe jumping is RTCW.

Horses for courses.

lol. oh.

And how do I mount? :p

Go up to something that you can mount on, EX: Teammates shoulder, sandbags, other object, or go prone by pressing Z and right click to mount. The aiming sensitivity is extremely slow, but the gun is overpowering.

I agree with the recoil. I know the die-hards will see it's realistic, and get used to it, but I think it would be a much more enjoyable experience if they tone it down.

Not COMPLETELY true.. as in DoD 1.1 - 1.3, the thompson and MP40 were quite accurate and easy to use at medium to long.

i am findin recoil difficult, gonna have to get used to it tho

awesome game never the less

i wasn't impressed with recoil...it's using a large cone system

anything that fires many rounds rapidly like smg or assault rifle on auto will have hit everywhere except where you intend by the 3rd round.

i think they should go back to the screen-recoil system where you could actually control the recoil to a degree like how it's supposed to. right now it's just too random.

The recoil of both smgs IS DEFINATELY higher than it was in DOD!
The bullets now also hit right and left to the point you're aiming at,
which makes it impossible to kill someone that is a few meters away.

I mean I was used to moving my mouse down while shooting with the
MP40 or the Thompson, but now I would have to adjust to the bullets
that go left and right, which IS IMPOSSIBLE!

Valve should definately tone it down a bit...

Ah the magical your bullets manage to go sideways despite the muzzle facing straight forward. Recoil should be limited to the gun jerking slighty upwards during bursts of fire.

the recoil on the thompson is way to much. it should be accurate up to medium distances, but its barely accurate at short distances. i know im comparing it to dod thompson but for this its the best comparison, the recoil efects for most of the guns need to be tweaked for dod:s but the thompson really needs the tweaking.

YES PLEASE VALVE can you tone the recoil down a bit or make it an option for us to controle the amount ourselfs.
Does Valve read these posts and make a note "I hope so"

The recoil is apropriate for the smg/assault class. I seem to always get the most kills in a server with that class because of rushing tactics and flanking. The
smg's are not mean't to be a weapon for anything other then close ranged fighting and it does a good job at it if you're using it correctly.

That's not the point Delirious, we all know they're the weapon of choice if you're up close. The point is they're completely useless a medium distances - no matter how skilled you are.

This shouldn't be the case. Nobody is asking for these guns to dominate at longer ranges, just for them to be some use.

Recoil is fine, its the guns accuracy that you are complaining about. :p

Personally, I think its perfectly balanced. Yes the guns aren't accurate, its because Rifles are supposed to have the upper hand at range, if you have a SMG with the accuracy of a rifle, who would bother using rifles? You would dominate at both CC and long range.

i used the rifle in dod, still used the thompson aswell. on source i feel totally useless with the thompson, the point is the thompson should be more use over a middle distance and the rifle great at any range .

We're not talking about long range tho - but situations that a smg should still have the advantage over a rifle, or at least have some use.

Someone with a rifle can strafe around a corner just 7 metres away and easily kill someone with a machine gun. Also, I can't count the amount of times i've had the drop on someone, had all the time in the world to line up a clear shot, just for my carefully aimed shots to land no where near them. Alerted by the bullets the rifleman has all the time in the world to turn around and kill you with one easy shot.

The imbalance was higlighted last night, while playing on old DoD clan (I assume they played DoD before as they knew the maps very well) Aside from the odd heavy machine gunner and sniper, all had rifles. When asked why they weren't using smgs the reply was - 'they suck', which became all too apparent as they tore down a team that almost doubled them in numbers repeatedly.

please sort out the recoil, its the only thing that lets this great game down

What recoil? I'm good with the smg's anyways. You just need to get used to it and handle it. Especially when you crouch or prone, you can do miracles with that gun. You can also use it for suppressing fire at closer ranges.

I have just finished demo off call of duty 2 even though it is single player only and that both games have gone for different feel, I just felt guns felt so much more responsive and have better aim as weel in COD2.
Please dont flame me I just feel it should be better, then again in DOD iam not sure if its more to do with lag, WHAT DO YOU THINK????

yes i def agree that they over did the recoil on both the mp40 and thompson... i still think it is a great a game.. hope to see you guys on soon..
