The best RPG's you know of. I'm in the mood idk why. It can be as old as snes, or as new as playstation 3 i dont care. What im looking for is:

Immersion (not physically obviously)
A really good story
Characters that you like (most rpgs i played i couldnt give a shit less who they were, very boring)
Good battle system

And just an overall 9/10 or higher rpg. Let me know!

ALL the final fantasy games on the playstation, but i believe youve already played them.

Baulders gate 2- EXCELLENT freeform RPG. brilliant story and so big itll blow your mind. This is the Daddy of all rpgs ;) tons of weapons, tons of choices and loads to do.

DO NOT GET neverwinter nights. its a 3D baulders gate, just with a REALLY CRAP story... and to me, story means everything.

Fallout 1 and fallout 2- great RPGs, very satisfying, wonderful to play. Set in a post nuclular setting, the world has fallen apart due to war and america is now a giant desert with small settlements of tribes. its so fun to scavange for old junk, from 1970's guns to modern day technology and even glimpses of what it was like before the war- glimpses of sophisticated technology. a nice touch is that you start off knowing nothing, not even where the nearest city is, and so you literally have to dicover everything for yourself by trudging through the desert. i discoverd an alien ship when i was really low level and got an alien pistol, and that gave me an amazing head start :)

Star wars: KOTOR, its based on baulders gate but much simpler, although the graphics are very nice and the choices are superb. theres a huge sense of choice- the game itself is linear but you have a "bar" that tells you how evil / good you are, and being good lets you obtain light force powers etc. EXCELLENT story, definately worth it if you like RPGs. its nothing like star wars as well, its a lot newer and fresher, as it is set 4,000 years before A new hope.

if you have an Xbox fable is good, but its quite short. kinda similar to KOTOR but with more choice.

those are the only real ones ive played. my favorites out of this list are the FF games, fallout and baulders gate- but i like all of them.

The Suikoden series is one of my favourites, even if the first ones are a bit rare nowadays (though I think in the US they're more plentiful and popular). Get the original on the PSX; graphically, its meh, but it's bloody good fun to play, and has a great story. :)

I know you are a huge FF7 fan...but thats all i can recomend...it dosent get any better than that! :D

Skies of Arcadia
Dreamcast (i think its on gamecube too)
It will blow your mind, the ONLY rpg i ever really liked
The story is amazing, the enviroments breathtaking awe inspiring, ship and on foot battles brilliant, so cinematic, so much adventure, i cant stop raving about this game!

i have skies of arcadia on the gamecube, its rather good. it didnt get me hooked though... i havent played it for at least a year. i think im at that capital place thingie mabob... in cant really remember. tbh it is the ONLY RPG i have owned that i havent completed.

Star Wars : KOTOR
Rented it for one night and played it non-stop for a week. Blockbuster don't like me now.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Great storyline and interesting characters. Not as a good as KOTOR so far though. Plus the combat is a little wonky

Baldrus Gate (Both of them)
Planescape Torment (Beats FF7 handsdown in story!)
Neverwinter Nights (But only if you are into multiplayer)

Oh and don't go for Fable

Its a good game, but it isn't really an RPG. You are never given the chance to interact with anyone, unlike the other games mentioned in this thread.

Chrono Trigger for the SNES was way ahead of its time and was one of the most amazing RPG's I've ever played, even now. Morrowind Elder Scrolls was a really good one as well (PC XBox) http://www.elderscrolls.com/home/home.htm
Another really good RPG is Arc the Lad Twilight of Spirits (PS2), really interesting game, where you play two story lines that interact. http://www.rpgdreamer.com/arc4/

If your looking for good RPG's the PS2 is imho the leader of the best, the PC the last, all the RPG's made for the PC so far are all the same except for a few, ie some of the FF series made for the PC. Anyways, lots and lots out there, but if you have a PS2 there are tons of really good ones.

i like fable! while yes it is not a traditional RPG, it is very much freeform. you interact with loads of people in any way you choose, except it is all simple gestures or phisical actions. if you hit someone in the face, they will cower away from you and hate you. if you buy a man a beer, he will cheer for you and aplaud you. if you pose infront of a woman, she will be impressed and blush wehn you walk past. fable is very much an RPG, its just very different from the traditional ones.

evern the action combat system has more things in common with an RPG than a beat em up. you can be the worst person in the world at combat, but you can make up for it by doing quests and saving up enough money to buy an awesome sword.

in fact my only criticism of fable is it is too short, there could have been more areas and quests, as well as a longer story. but this is only because it is made on Xbox, and they had to cut stuff out to make it fit on the disc.

i COMPLETELY disagree. the PC is the home of every single RPG, consoles just make immitations. baulders gate, fallout, NWN, morrowind and every MMO.... the PC is full of RPGs and has all the classics.

tbh the playstation 1 completely owns the PS2 in terms of RPGs. the PS2 just has crappy sequels, but the PS1 has all the final fantasy games, wild arms, that one beginning with V etc.

Morrowind!!
The battle system is...dull though go find some mods and it can become really nice.
1st or 3rd person views.(Person Eyes or Just Behind them).

You can overall go anywhere, do anything. It has a story(Though I never went that way). Huge landmass with huge dungeons.

It's overall really fun and by far the most addiciting rpg I've overall played(besides the first diablo). Right away I was addicted for like 2 weeks straight. It's ALL I played. It's really nice and I simply love it. With literally like 10,000 mods it has tons of extentions.

You play as a character that was released from prison for an unknown reason onto morrowind(or something like that). You pretty much choose your class as they ask you questions for you release forms. Alot of editable things for your character(I recommend getting face mods). Since your character has an... "Unknown" background you can really become anythign you want. You can be a stealthy character, and kill. You can be a hero. Guards can arrest you though you can pay your way out of it(giving any stolen items to), resist arrest, or go to jail. It's overall really fun and I recommend it to anyone.

The engine draws..oddly.. so I recommend a decent comp. The engine draws everything instead of just what you can see making the performance really slow. The land is placed into diffrent "zones"(during zones you might notice a small pause if you have a low comp for it to load). All houses and dungeons require loads. This is mostly due to the fact that you can really interact with alot of object. No, not physics. But rather you can pick up spoons, forks, lights, plates, food, books(which you can read, some are pretty nice) etc.. Alot of things. It can be considered "stealing". I personally love this game and any minute I play it once I'm addicited for the week or 2.

w/e ps2 can play ps1 and ps2 games, and if you liked the originals for ps1, like i did, then you'll like the sequels for ps2 and I hate all the new rpgs that are coming out on the PC, i'm a fan of turn based, and imo chrono trigger was the best rpg i've ever played and no RPG made for the PC has ever come close to it. I'm not sure what you mean by
i COMPLETELY disagree. the PC is the home of every single RPG, consoles just make immitations
but the console first came out with the RPG's then they got ported over to the PC, although I'm interested in this Fallout game, i've never had the chance to play it yet. I've got the old SNES and i still find time to play games like Secret of Mana and Legend of Zelda a Link to the past and chrono trigger.

Kingdom Heats<----My favorite RPG, Chrono Trigger, or any FF game.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, nuff said
and if you want a PC one, well, Fallout or Fallout 2
